This is not the Star Wars game that Respawn is working on, btw.
lol sports games is literally the only reason why EA is still around
I bet Disney pulled the plug on it after the Battlefront 2 shenanigans
good, it probably would have been shit anyway considering it was going to be duct taped together from the corpse of 1313
probably for the best this time
EA: "We love to make money, but we hate giving consumers joy even more."
EA make an open world game is hilarious and avoiding crimes against humanity given the way they work people in a crunch. EA does not have the patience or dedication to build a fleshed out open world game and would substitute detail and time for armies of underpaid overworked coding monkeys.
Can't wait for EA's exclusivity contract to end. They've done fuck all with the franchise.
1313? That game was cancelled more than half a decade ago and was under development by LucasArts, not Visceral
The whole thing was built around P2Win microtransactions, wasn't it? This was their next step if Battlefront II had actually gotten away with that shit.
Please, EA. Release all your captives with their publishing rights just like Activision did with Bungie.
I can feel it. Anthem will be the last Bioware game, and Respawn's Jedi game will be released unfinished so they can reap the contract rewards before it's gone.
I can't get too excited, rumor has it Disney shopped around with Activison and Ubisoft to replace EA for the contract.
What they need to do is just go back to how it used to be done, were anyone could make a Star Wars game if the concept and pitch was good enough.
abandon all your starwars rights EA so respawn can work on TF3
also, abandon battlefield as an IP thanks
Eh, Ubisoft might be able to do something with it. Activision is a big nope.
My bad, I had some info mixed up. I incorrectly thought that Visceral had absorbed some former LucasArts project as some developers from Lucas had contacted Visceral to pitch them taking over 1313. I thought this deal went through but what actually happened was they said no to that deal and instead hired some LucasArts staff to work for visceral.
Essentially I thought 1313 was analogous to Project Ragtag. My point still stands though, the new game was essentially going to be cobbled together from existing assets from a completely different game
Cant we get a SWG like game puhlease.
Every time I see a headline about EA axing another game or studio I get terrified thinking it's Respawn's head on the block, those guys deserve way better than the EA treatment
I wish they could go solo while retaining the rights for Titanfall. Or ideally get a better publisher that will at least give them the treatment they deserve.
how about read the article
How do you get handed the exclusive licence to make games for the biggest film franchise in history and end up doing so little with it.
It's worse when you think EA doesn't actually have to do anything, they can just hand the projects to their dev studios.
It's just pathetic how they've been given perhaps the largest, most popular sci-fi IP and so far decided to do pretty much nothing with the setting. There's so much potential and it could be used for all sorts of different genres, but after nearly 5 years all we've had is 2 half-complete, lacking games that are shadows of the once awesome Battlefront series and cancellations.
Giving EA the license exclusively was a terrible idea. They should have done what they did before, or what Games Workshop does with the Warhammer/W40K IP - anyone can approach them with an ideafor a game. That's resulted in some average games, but also lots of great games that wouldn't even have been considered by a AAA developer.
EA could legit just say to their studios, "go ham" but they wont.
If you noticed, every time a big publisher has let their studios just go crazy and do whatever, its turned out to be pretty impressive.
Ubisoft has loosened their grip a lot and look at what their studios are doing, Activision has done a bit of the same, the Crash and Spyro remakes were pitched to them by the studio and they just let them go for it.
EA has a serious control issue with their studios and it ends up killing them. They're not good to work for and EA studios end up being CV filler for most people, its not a career for them which is another issue.
So when you get the exclusive access to fucking Star Wars and forcefully shit out a a worse battlefield clone, ignore all the gameplay mechanics that worked in the past, cut the development time of it significantly and try to sell it off as a finished product.
You're fucked when people stop buying into it.
Much like Valve, EA is kept alive by milking one, and only one branch of its porfolio, for Valve it's Steam, for EA its SPORTS GAMES.
Two games in five years. Why isn't Disney knocking the door down yet?
Because Disney themselves are running Star Wars into the ground.
I thought this happened months ago.
Anyways we still have Respawn Studio's Single Player game coming this Winter.
Probably stuck with their contract with them for now if I had to guess.
IIRC it expires in 2020
Oh fuck you EA.
Star Wars is such a rich IP with so much potential, and yet in recent years we have had... two half-baked battlefield clones, and some token support for EA's wow clone (and even then it's overwhelmingly new vanity items being added to the game's cash store).
Where are the games like KOTOR? or Jango Fett: Bounty Hunter?, or even something on the level of the fucking Force Unleashed? why is there fucking nothing being made that explores this expansive sci-fi universe in ways only possible in the video game medium?.
Why must 90% of AAA video games always just boil down to ~if you can't easily implement an exploitative monetization scheme into the product that enables players to spend with no upper limit, don't fucking bother making it~
They barely played like battlefield. I really wouldn't call them clones. That's just an insult to Battlefield.
