WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump should either delay his State of the Union address or submit it in writing, Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote Wednesday in a letter citing the security
burdens that the annual address to a joint session of Congress would place on a partially shuttered federal government.
"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for
this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th," Pelosi wrote in the letter to Trump.
The White House did not immediately reply to NBC's requests for comment.
A State of the Union address has not been rescheduled since President Ronald Reagan chose to move his planned Jan. 28, 1986, speech when the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up
that morning. Reagan instead addressed the nation from the Oval Office that night and postponed the State of the Union.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told NBC that the House is sending Trump a message that normal business won't be conducted while large parts of the government remain
closed. Pelosi's letter was sent one day after a group of moderate Democrats boycotted Trump's invitation to the White House for a lunch to discuss the border-wall fight at the heart of
the shutdown, and it was unclear as of mid-morning Wednesday how many of a second group of Democratic lawmakers invited to the White House for an afternoon meeting on the
same topic would show up.
The guy giving the State of the Union is trying to divide it.
Pelosi should just learn already whatever she says is going to be ignored by Trump, the dude is an arrogant predictable twit.
He'll probably still do the SOTU like normal while using it as an opportunity to shit on everyone else.
"Give me a wall and MAYBE I'll think about it!"- Trump, probably
Telling Trump he can't do something usually has the opposite effect, I hope he makes a huge point of it
The state of the union is bad, very bad. The lyin' democrats still haven't built a wall. *applause* Thank you, beautiful, just beautiful. Good night America.
The Constitution mandates the State of the Union and the Speaker just disinvited him to speak. So he pretty much has to do it in writing as I don't think the Senate chamber can fit all of Congress plus the other
people that come.
Even if he does still give the address. It's going to be full of fear mongering and lies. It'll keep doing more harm than good
it's best not to put the weight of congress behind it. He gives it from the oval office, it's just the lunatic ravings of a madman
and it was unclear as of mid-morning Wednesday how many of a second group of Democratic lawmakers invited to the White House for an afternoon meeting on the same topic would show up.
Am I the only one who'd show up simply for the free food?
McD ain't that expensive, and if you eat there directly instead of at the White House, you don't have to look at Trump or any of his cronies.
I'd rather pay $10 to sit in a McDonald's drive thru and not have to deal with any of that shit. I'm happy to donate to you so you don't have to suffer.
He already did, 20 minutes before she would depart.
Eh, as long as you occasionally fluff his ego he'll look away from ya, too busy waffling on about emails and walls and inauguration crowds to really care. And I'm damn good at tuning people out to boot. It wouldn't bother me one bit.
tbh if someone offered me free McDonalds I probably wouldn't take it. If it was Five Guys I'd take it but I still doubt I'd go to the whitehouse for it
As much as I despise Trump, this is one of the few times where his passive aggression was actually kinda focused to the point of being genuinely chuckle worthy.
That's not a signature, that's a sawtooth wave.
