I know the Express is a bad source, but it's the only one I could find in English. Here are French trustworthy sources which relay the same infos.
Olivier Beziade suffered a “very serious brain injury” after being shot from behind by a police officer using a flash ball gun during the yellow vest demonstration in Bordeaux on Saturday. The father-of-three is currently in an induced coma in hospital, according to his family. A shocking video shows blood pouring from Mr Beziade’s head as he is treated by paramedics.
Mr Beziade’s wife Cindy told French media: “I'm furious. This is unacceptable. I won't let it go. The pictures speak for themselves.
The demonstration was calm until about 4.30pm. I was with my husband in Rue Sainte-Catherine.
Then there was a bit of panic. We turned turned back to avoid teargas fumes and to go home. I turned first right, he took the first turning on the left.”
Mr Beziade was then shot by an officer with a flash ball gun, while another threw a stun grenade towards him.
Local police have ordered an investigation, claiming a group of yellow vests protesters were “trying to get into an Apple store nearby” at the time of the incident.
This weekend marked the ninth week of yellow vest protests - named after the high-visibility jackets they wear - which have rocked French President Emmanuel Macron’s premiership.
There were 32,000 demonstrators across the country on Saturday, including 8,000 in Paris, according to official estimates.
Shooting flash balls at head level is illegal. But riot police hasn't given a shit about that since the beginning of the protest, because they know they won't be held accountable for it, so this was bound to happen eventually.
The fuckers had already poked some protesters' eyes out.
if macron doesn't step down he's going to end up headless
Flashballs are fucking vile, many Gilets Jaunes have lost an eye to them already, these protests are exactly when you should NOT use these devices.
I haven't been keeping up with the situation in France but I've seen some awful footage of riot police from there. For example, attacking people who are just standing at a distance filming. Are the protests really violent enough to justify this?
I don't see how any level of violence could justify attacking people for merely filming. Sounds to me like they want to be able to take some "liberties" while avoiding compromising videos.
Same thing for this guy, who was shot while running away, in the back of the head no less. Doesn't seem to me like he was an imminent threat whatsoever.
In general, I don't believe the level of violence is such that this sort of careless retaliation would be justified, even if I can't speak for all of France. If anything, riot police are responsible for the vast majority of ER trips.
the level of violence make me think there's some real fear of the movement in the establishment
The pigs are just jackboots for the rich and the political. Treating them as anything other than that is suicide.
Jesus Christ these things aren't a joke

Whenever a country tries to get "smart" about utilizing non-lethal measures in crowd control it only increases the rioters intensity because of shit like this.
It is spreading.
Been going on in Belgium for a while and recently (at least I've noticed recently) also entered the Netherlands.
I find it weird to see people that should protect and serve take shots at the very people they should protect.
I mean, they get paid by the taxes of the people.
Sure, they're just "following orders" but the level of violence is way overboard. Seen videos of elderly peole getting battered, shits inhumane.
Well that's just rude. I don't consider myself much of a bastard.
Okay, so in light of the upcoming 3-month national debate where every citizen will supposedly be able to contribute online, I'd like to make a submission on tackling police brutality. My suggestions are:
First and foremost, give uniforms a clearly visible, possibly color-coded identification number so that regulatory authorities can easily identify any officer on video evidence using a registry, along with the squad, station, etc... That they belong to.
If evidence of an officer not properly displaying their identification comes to light, he shall receive sanctions. If the officer can't be properly identified after an investigation, his lowest-ranked identifiable commanding officer shall be sanctioned. This should ensure that commanding officers properly enforce identification regulations on their subordinates.
Mandatory bodycams, that should be turned on and record during any intervention. The unedited contents shall be uploaded to a publicly open government website after a short delay. Any officer can be proved to have taken part in an intervention he can't provide personal footage for shall receive sanctions.
Since officers are apparently incapable of respecting the law while using flash ball guns, put mandatory gyroscopic locks on them that prevent firing above the horizon line. If such technology is impossible to put in place or unreliable, blanket flash ball gun ban.
Ban on GLI-F4 grenades, which have already mutilated several protesters. No other country uses explosive ammo for riot control.
I'm open to suggestions and criticisms, especially from people who know a bit more about this stuff than I do. I'd like to have something rock solid by the time the platform opens.
It did. Many decades ago. It was called socialism and the capitalists of the world tried to wipe it out. They almost did, now its making a comeback slowly but surely.
