Michael Cohen is having reservations about his highly anticipated public appearance before Congress next month, fearing that President Donald Trump’s frequent diatribes against him
could put his family in danger, according to sources close to Cohen.
While his testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform appears to be on track to occur as scheduled on Feb. 7, it is now less certain than it initially appeared that
Cohen – Trump’s former attorney and fixer – will sit before lawmakers, those sources told ABC News.
As the president continues to engage in what Cohen sees as reckless and unsubstantiated claims he believes are intended to intimidate him, Cohen has expressed to friends his
concern that Trump’s heated rhetoric on television and Twitter could incite an unstable person to target him or his family. Cohen has become so worried that he is now questioning
whether a public hearing is in his best interest, sources said, and people close to him have advised him to reconsider.
In an interview with FOX News on Saturday, Trump called Cohen “weak,” accused him of lying to prosecutors in order to get a reduced sentence, and hinted – unprompted and without
evidence – that he possessed damaging information about Cohen’s family.
Congressional leaders have been helpful and accommodating to Cohen’s concerns, sources told ABC News, and Cohen still wants to testify, but the president’s recent comments are
not the first time he has gone after Cohen and his family. And late last year, Trump called Cohen a “rat” for cooperating with federal prosecutors.
Surprise, you work for a criminal like a criminal, when you finally turn on him, don’t expect things to be pretty.
That said, this also speaks on behalf of Trump’s sway on public opinion. If he influenced those shootings and mail bomb attempts, who knows how he could phrase “won’t someone rid me of this meddlesome covfefe boy?” against him.
probably shouldn't have lied to congress back when you had the chance to set the record
I get that he's a piece of shit, but I don't hate his family. I sympathize with him that much. He's one of the most watched people in America right now.
I'd be pretty worried for my family/friends' safety too if I had crossed Donald "You Have to Take Out Their Families" Trump
Fuck your family, asshole. How many tens of thousands of families are in danger right now because of your former clients bullshit!?
It's almost as if working with organized crime isn't such a hot idea...
yeah man I'm sure his 2 kids are to blame for their dads shit, they should be shot
"Why the fuck are you blaming the father? The kids caused their own death by being part of the family, something that's a big no-no ESPECIALLY when they more than likely saw the fucking collusion."
Did anyone here read Comey's book? Comey talks about his experience as a federal prosecutor working to put the mafia in prison. He kept saying that Trump reminds him a LOT of the Mafia guys he would interrogate. In fact, he really frames the whole "Trump" thing as a matter of organized crime, not really as a matter of Russian espionage
I mean Russia is run as a mafia organization.
Imagine if your relative turned out to be a traitor and you got mistreated for the rest of your life.
Yeah, fuck his family, eh? They have it coming...
That's what I get for not doing anything to stop it.
Seriously dude? If you were threatened by your relation to your asshole uncle you would blame yourself?
How would they even know? They're not privy to his work, I imagine.
It's not the left he has to fear. It's Trump's die-hard supporters who might want to silence him. Or, you know, the possibility of the President trying to call a hit on him or his family in desperation. Would you put anything past Trump at this point?
I sure would, I'm fairly certain thinking rationally is quite past him.
I can sympathize with his plight, but this is how Trump wins, by pulling out the most reprehensible moves in the book.
I won't go so far as Ronin, but if Trump's big weapon here is threatening Cohen's family, then we have to find a way around that. We can't let that be what stops us from getting to the truth.
"Hey honey how was work?"
"Oh, just doing some illegal backdoor communication with the Kremlin. Nothing new. Wow this casserole is fantastic!"
Is not a conversation that happens in even the best of marriages/families.
If Cohen or anyone related to him dies, it should be taken as all the evidence we need that the president and anyone in the Republican party who defends him is a traitor to their own country.
I fully believe that this kind of sentiment only serves to further the divide and gap. Anyone remotely right leaning viewing that is going to just associate the left with being against innocent families. That's not helping.
Cohen himself doesn't deserve sympathy, he was a willing and witting(as much as possible) participant in these crimes and should face penalties even if he co-operated with the investigation. His family though? They didn't have any agency, and don't deserve any punishment here. His family, is just like everyone else. They didn't make his decisions, they just have to live with them, like we all do. Don't punish them, don't advocate for punishing them, I don't think it helps anyone or anything. Even if it's cathartic.
