10 years left to curb catastrophic destruction.
I fucking hate boomers.
Bad economic times create good people, good times create narcissists. They simply do not see why anything should be done about climate change as they're not allowed to by Fox News.
I can't believe the people that lived through the shifting climate are the ones that didn't notice. Like you don't realize how it barely snows anymore?
It's not that simple. Global warming increases the number and intensity of extreme climatic events: snowstorms are bigger, cold fronts are colder, dry places get drier, places where it rains often get more floods, hurricanes get stronger ect...
And it's going to keep going that way until we do something about it but it's probably going to be completely out of our hands within the next 10 to 20 years. I guess live with the knowledge that you probably won't live long enough to see the worst of it.
The thing with Antarctica is the way it differs from Greenland. Luckily for us greenland island is shaped like a cup with a lot of mountains near the coasts it gives a good slowdown for the glaciers to flow in to the sea. So the ice sheet melts slower by comparison. But in Antarctica the ice sheet covers an entire continent, which has only parts with mountains on the coast to slow down the glacier flow. So the glaciers move way faster since there is far less mountains on the way to slow them down. So far Antarctica has been melting slowly because of wind and ocean currents that keep circling the cold water around Antarctica. But if that is to change Antarctica could release a lot more water into the oceans rapidly than Greenland could.
was industrial society worth it?
yes, for our species at least.
How about instead we live with the knowledge that our generation can be the key to saving our planet instead? If we all just roll over and accept the "inevitable," then yeah, we're all gonna die. But that's a terrible attitude to have.
And yes, I am aware that fossil fuel companies produce most of the Co2 in the world. That's why we need to go and fucking vote, or hell, actually run for office like a certain Alexandria Osario-Cortez did. Point is, if you're sitting around refusing to so much as go and vote in primaries and elections, you're part of the problem.
is it really an improvement if it comes at the cost of mass discontent and us being choked to death? we created worse problems by trying to make things easier. i personally don't think our species has the capacity to control what has been unleashed. i don't think we're going to make it this time, we can't avoid environmental collapse and the mass death that will come along with it. maybe in the future, our descendants will learn from our mistakes, but as i see it our current way of living is doomed.
It would have been an improvement if, when faced with the evidence of its problems as well as solutions, people didn't scoff and say "Nah, this is fine as it is!"
Woah there cowboy, I think you've misconstrued my post. I don't see how you could have gathered from it that I was being defeatist. I was stating facts to get our asses into gear. It's up to us to do something about global warming. Regardless, the clock is running out and even if we all manage to pull a 180 on our emissions of greenhouse gases there is still a good chance that it will only minimise climate change. I hope it won't get to that point.
Only because of the last line in your original post. And because there are other people on this site that have been very much defeatists. Good to see that's not the case, and I apologize for misreading you.
Am I defeatist if I think that we're fucked, the system is rigged by plutocrats, but I still vote in every election I can?
I just can't imagine going into politics myself like AOC without putting a gun to my head
No, defeatism would be not even voting, and just accepting the "inevitable" and intentionally living a life that is as wasteful and unproductive as possible. There's a difference between pessimism and defeatism.
Curb?
It's too late, y'all will sink.
And your administrative apparatus is woefully unprepared for when the thing cronches off into the sea. I would already hire people to make projects to relocate infrastructure if I had to take care of coastal land.
We? You're coming with us, buddy. The entire world will be effected by imminent climate disaster. Serbia, however inland it may be, will still be effected through trade and diplomacy. Where do you think you get the things you can't find in your country?
Also, t. shitposting serb who always has a controversial opinion
Yeah, because every coastal country is a microstate that will be fucked - and like the sea level will suddenly bounce up in a day. Autarky should have been practiced, but now we have reached a point where it will be imposed with extreme violence. Such is life
I understand the dire nature of our situation, but this article seems to completely ignore the very real possibility of us using science and technology to not only stall but outright reverse the impact of climate change. Like, the big thing that popped out at me immediately was him talking about coral reefs being one of the earth's natural features we're going to have to say goodbye to - because we literally had an article two months ago about a scientist discovering a groundbreaking coral reef recovery method.
And that was discovered by accident. Imagine what we can do if we intentionally focus on developing the necessary technologies to save our planet and our species. See, this isn't the first time we've faced down oblivion before: WWII was seen by many at the time to potentially be do or die for civilization. And what our country in particular accomplished in such a short time to make the Invasion of Normandy and the atomic bombs possible was incredible. This is the drive we need again - because make no mistake, battling climate change is a war for our survival, just like WWII was. The key is making people understand. The baby boomer generation, of course, is fucked - but they're all going to die sooner than average anyway, owing to their extremely poor health. Millennials and generation Z are not just the future - they're far more open minded than the older generations. We need to teach them what Pearl Harbor taught America back in WWII - which, before that point, legitimately thought it could just sit out the war and weather the resulting storm.
Don't worry guys, there is trillions dollars worth of alien tech underneath the ice sheets, we'll be able to get it.
