Too bad, we have to leave, we need to honour the will of the people.
This whole fiasco demonstrates just how ludicrous Cameron's referendum was, and furthermore how badly the Conservatives have handled things since. You can't hold such a wide-ranging referendum, which proceeds to win by a very small margin, and then use 'democracy' as a battering ram with which to act as little dictators. They've done nothing more than try to bully Europe and Parliament around to get exactly what they want for the country, and if anybody questions it, they're traitors trying to subvert the will of the people!
Our political system was not designed with referenda in mind. If people can acknowledge that the 1975 referendum may not have been a permanent testament of the people's interest, it's entirely possible to do the same with this. Ultimately, I think we have little choice at this point but to postpone Brexit, either in the short-term (ie before May, for desperate cross-party renegotiations with the EU to leave just before the European Parliament elections), or, preferably, for a longer period, giving ourselves a year or so to actually prepare a leaving plan and work out what people want. This would not be less democratic, it would be more democratic, because you'd actually be consulting the populace on what kind of Brexit we actually want to have - if any.
YouGov is the only pollster with such a large margin and only if 'don't knows' are excluded.
Backing for another referendum among Labour Party supporters was at 78 percent, the poll showed.
That should say Members also, not 'supporters' which implies voters I guess.
country is broke. let me off.
The poll was 1,000 people lol, most of the polls prior to the vote favoured remain, how did that turn out? Oh, remain had 1.3m million less votes.
If the EU doesn't want to play ball that's fine, we can trade with the world under the WTO rules and not send £20bill a year being sent to some un-elected wankers in Brussels. It will be interesting to see how the EU recovers losing one of their biggest contributors, Germany is already on the brink of recession and I think the domino's are ready to fall.
a second referendum is just painful enough for all parties involved so as to force leadership to avoid it meanwhile the country is in freefall as everybody that can is leaving.
Imagine you're so worried about admitting you made a bad choice that you're willing to plunge your country off a cliff to avoid it.
Even if this were true (it's a stretch at best), it's better than our situation. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT LEAVING AN ECONOMIC UNION WOULD BE BAD FOR OUR ECONOMY.
Actually the UK receive(s/d) more money from the EU than it puts in so uhh, you're wrong. You've always been wrong, stop peddling bullshit lies and face the fact that you're full of shit.
This is what keeps getting me cus the only reason a lot of people can now give for why we have to keep this shit going is that it's the will of the people, but there's a lot of evidence to suggest that it isn't the will of the people
The polls were flipping back and forth, and the result was within their margin of error - they didn't get it wrong. This predicts a far more decisive remain vote than the polls before the referendum.
i love this idea that "things will be better in the WTO!" when our first post-Brexit proposal tabled at the WTO was shot down by none other than Russia
WTO rules are fucking garbage compared to what we have currently on top of that lmao. We'll still end up having to accept some freedom of movement with trade partners under WTO rules as we start to negotiate trade deals individually. We'll still end up with billions in debts to trade partners because that's how trade currently works. We'll still end up taking on regulations and rules from trade partners to fit their import standards and requirements.
At least in the EU we managed to get ourselves in a position where we didn't need to accept total freedom of movement and all that to trade. We have a positively cushy deal right now. Even compared to other founding EU member states.
Also what's with right wing chodes constantly bringing up "Germany is about to have a recession!!!" recently? Has there been some right wing media campaign to highlight that or what? Because newsflash: fucking everyone is headed towards a recession at this rate. We've got two superpowers trying to actively kill their own economies and Russia is getting expansionist again fucking up the economics of the local area.
Ryus post is actually a fantastic example of the kind of poorly informed fantastical viewpoint that most people in this country seem to share.
If you want to know why this country is sleepwalking into disaster its because a huge number of people have been tricked into believing that we're some global superpower and the EU will collapse into flames without us
Moving away from the evil regulations made by unelected bureaucrats of Brussels (other than all the ones we elect, obviously), and towards the free, democratic regulations made by the WTO! I remember voting for my World Trade Organisation representative so clearly, it was a rainy Friday in Smarch...
No one elected May either.
Not in the first place, but she did technically 'win' an election (even if it was a loss compared to the previous GE). Ironically, I'm actually glad she's not standing down right now, because that would mean that our future path for Brexit would be decided exclusively by Conservative party members, which I'm sure everybody can agree is not representative of either the 52% or the 48%.
