Yikes all round.
Yike for the parent who let their kids use their CCs to go fucking crazy.
Yike for Facebook refusing to refund.
2019 is already off to a bad start for Facebook.
Not bad enough just yet
they deserve worse
Am I the only one who had parents who actually hid their credit cards and gave me proper punishments to discourage me touching their shit? WTF is up with parents just leaving their shit for kids to use and / or actively allowing them to use it?
I see kids nowadays taking their parents cars out and shit when I had my permit and eventually license my parents basically told me to go fuck myself and get my own car lol. Parents need to get their shit together.
It's a bit fucked up that parents think this isn't serious.
I'm not surprised. FB all around is just terrible at everything. I wouldn't doubt Google pulls this kind of shit too.
Glad to see FB getting steamrolled well into 2019 though. 2018 was a well-deserved PR nightmare for them.
It's true that you should really be more careful when entering your cc info but honestly for some parents they could be careful about it for years and then one slip-up forgetting to uncheck the "save my card info for later" button and your kid unwittingly racks up hundreds of dollars of micro-transactions. IMO there needs to be better ways to deal with things like this and companies really shouldn't be bothered about giving refunds unless they're repeat offenders
Perhaps require a parents authentication? Security authentication would be sick against this. Make the parent have to unlock for every purchase. Have a separate authentication for every purchase. Eventually you'd get fed up parents or realise before it's too late what is happening.
I could imagine forcing fingerprint or face ID or even a parents password that's separate from unlocking the device could be awesome and would go down well.
Setting spend control would be useful too. Some carriers do this(mine does to prevent over charges).
Not surprising. I bet now that this has recently infected the AAA industry as well, we're going to eventually see reports of more companies doing similar shit. When you have all the bigwigs like EA, Valve, Activision, Take Two and the like shoving petty shit like $5 skins down people's gullets and then reporting record earnings, a good portion of them must have come from exploited individuals and kids who don't know any better.
This is just the state of play with most games that get churned out like a factory product. Unless execs get thrown in jail for refusing to correct this crap, it's only going to get worse.
Feels a little excessive. We (or at least the account I use) already have SMS authentication that gives us a randomly generated code we need to type in to finalize a transaction. If little Timmy taps the purchase button on his tablet, I would need to be there with my phone for that purchase to work. Heck, not saving CC info is already sort of a security feature preventing minors from using it, but parents love convenience because... well life can be hard for parents I guess. Really, the blame should be more on the richfags who greenlight these exploitable business opportunities that have remained untouched by most governments.

Aren't OTP like... a thing? How is it not compulsory for all cards?
Didn't stop me from stealing from my parents as a kid to play some Korean MMO.

This isn't enough
This is nothing new. There's been the exact same uproar ever since it's been possible to do things like this, like using phone to make purchases and such.
