Yume Nikki (ゆめにっき) is a 32-bit freeware surreal horror/adventure game created by Kikiyama, using RPG Maker 2003. Initially released in June 2004 (and released on Steam in January 2018), it has gained a cult following, inspired an enormous number of fangames and spawned an official 3D adaptation/remake.
The player assumes the role of Madotsuki, a young girl presumed to be a hikikomori (social recluse) who refuses to leave her apartment and instead seeks refuge in a sprawling, interconnected dream world. This dream world has many unique places to explore and secrets to uncover, from the silly to the bizarre and macabre.
While the game has no explicit plot, the player can unlock the game's ending by collecting 24 effects and dropping them in the dream world's central Nexus. These items usually only provide a cosmetic change, but many of them have practical uses as well. Very few effects require the use of others to reach, and so they can be collected in almost any order, although it is recommended to collect the Bicycle first as its speed boost makes navigating the world much faster.

YUME NIKKI FANGAMES
There are hundreds of Yume Nikki fangames available for download. A complete list can be found on the YN Fangames wiki, but here are a few standout examples:

.flow breaks away from Yume Nikki's abstract, ambiguous visuals in lieu of more explicit body horror imagery. It is notable for being one of the more story-based and disturbing fangames.

Yume 2kki is a 2chan collaboration project and features a massive range of locations and effects, as well as four main endings.
This was my jam several years ago. (especially around the time I was a shut-in myself)
It introduced me to the RPGmaker horror genre, and into vgperson's translations.
tbh I always wanted to make a Yume Nikki fangame of my own, never really got around to it though and never had any ideas that didn't lean too much on what YN already established, aesthetically. even early areas of .flow are very YN-y (tile path in a void, etc)
These games were alot to take in when I was a young, impressionable little teenager
.flow and yume nikki are like ingrained into my early teenage hood now
Yume Nikki hits a very soft spot in my youth because when I just started exploring the internet beyond websties my older cousins had bookmarked and Google, I discovered the game and was infatuated with it. I remember spending days watching this person do a let's play of it because I wanted to know everything I could. Even know seeing gameplay and hearing the UI takes me back.
Man, I remember when Yume Nikki was big. It really got me interested in the capabilities of rpgmaker and the kind of games that can be created with it.
It's kind of a shame -DREAM DIARY- ended up being pretty limited in its number of locations and the lack of connections between them. They're mostly more like linear stages with only a few minor side areas, really.
I only ever finished the first game, not any of the fangames.
Did all of them have a similar bleak ending?
.flow's Rust ending creeps me out.
Speaking of Yume Nikki, I found that listening to some songs from it (specifically songs like Barracks Settlement, Snow World, Dark World and Martian Underground) while playing Subnautica turned it into a very tranquil experience. It really made the game more impactful.
Yume Nikki ost is so damn good
The Yume Nikki metroidvania fangame is the best Yume Nikki fangame. Prove me wrong.
I know it's subject to your opinion, but I enjoyed it enough to replay a couple times.
Flow. really is the most grimdark of all the fangames, right?
Err...I mean the one most suited to enhance the ambiguity of the original, right?
I like watching videos about this game way more than actually playing through my self. Nitrorad’s got a bunch of videos on these type of games.
