I’m posting this board of ideas hoping that as a rust player who has 1k hours but not someone of huge pvp i can provide a view of what a small community of players and i want rust to become.
Jobs
On the roadmap for rust there is rustNET but it just says jobs and nothing more. Rust is mainly a game of get, build, kill. There are small branches of different things like electricity and farming but have not been grown at all. Killing and raiding should not be the final aspect of rust. There should be different things so the community of rust has to work together.
Farming/Cooking
One of the Jobs could be farming. At the moment a player can eat 20 pumpkins, plant the seeds somewhere walled off, and be good for wipe. This needs to change. Food all together should become harder to get ready. Cooking recipes should be a new skill tree that would greatly fill a players tummy and possibly give a minor buff and/or debuff. Grills should be tier one cooking place (for higher tier) and then some higher level stove that is salvaged from old cooking supplies. Cooked food should be well prepared by cutting and cooking exact pieces and then crafting it together. The way items should be gathered is by harvesting and slaughtering. Meat needs to be able to spoil and only be safe by a fridge or salt. Vegetables should also spoil but slower and be harder to find. Animals should be able to be tamed and due to radiation quickly reproduce. Plants should be found wild and give a small amount of food or resource. They should be required to be planted and taken care of. Soil should matter, the amount of water, and the sun. Over time plants should grow better and animals should give more meat when killed if properly raised. With this you add a farmer of some sort who would sell food to everyone.
Chemist
First of all drugs are bad kids. Now a new skill tree in rust could be chemistry. Poisons and elixirs should be craftable. These drugs should apply to a person their whole character life or a certain duration. So when the character dies the buff or debuff should be gone too.
Electricity
Electricity in rust is in its early stages right now. Electricity should become more simple like have tripwire activate a mace trap killing most, but also more complex. Computers should get a screen and have a small arpaNET style. They should be like typing into a command log with other players. There should be simple black background and green text. TVs and Cameras should be able to be connected to a computer for more visuals. Computers should be common to find and current ooc text should be shut off. Radios should be added to communicate with people from far via voice. A New way of raiding should be added as well. Code Locks should be able to be hacked. The hacking item should be inexpensive, very long to complete , and possibly fail, but silent. There should be only one way to truly track it. Antennae should detect any signals from radios, chats, and code lock hackers.
They should also be able to be jammed by jammers which block all electricity.
Radio
The radio should be a new way of communication other than the common screaming or headshots. They should not be trackable and able to be placed on tables.
Crude Rust
The early stages of rust of with bows and eokas in my mind is short lived after wipe day. I believe guns should not only become harder to find but also able to jam so that nakeds can have a better chance to win. Guns in rust have so many pieces that are only touched with their crafting. To make them harder to make, pieces like cylinders, mags, barrels, and many other things can be added to make crafting more complex. Also the problem with crude and advanced pvp is the difference in range. A way to solve that is to make a crude musket of sort and making 5.56 bullets lvl 1 blueprints or a new musket shot. Also a level two bow with less drop should be added.
Testing
Testing on workbenches isn’t used enough other than lvl 1 workbenches. Testing should become more common by making blueprints that can only be found out by testing and the item can’t be found in a box. Gun parts or other metal pieces could be found out and could add a new job to rust.
Building
First of all building shouldn't make you have to build or take over a base. I think buildings that look like a rad site or decayed building should be simple to take over by adding a door and maybe a wall or two. I think it should not require any upkeep for the building that's generated but only the parts built inside it. It should not be able to be honeycombed to make it balanced. Before I was able to see that people could build in rad sites and wanted to do it ever since. I believe that the rights to build in rad sites should be brought back. A way to make it balanced is by giving it a high upkeep and/or having scientists attack and raid them. Another type of base building should be raft building. They should be on the water and have the buff of distance from people but maybe giving it lower stability. I've seen that work on adding waves was being worked on. If waves will be added so should currents. That would give movement to the raft bases
Wipless rust
Wipeless rust I believe can be achieved. Blueprints in rust can be learned but only forgotten on wipe. A way to fix that and make every life of a player more important by adding the possibility to forget. This would balance rust by making people have to farm with gear and not hoard loot. Also another way is to have scientists raid the powerful. What should happen is that if a base has a certain amount of military or high level weapons a timer for anyone tc authorized should have a timer for when a small group of scientist will try to raid the base. This can be a personal event to defend a players property. The scientist should have unlimited explosives and raid until all gun, tools, and materials are taken. They should come down in a heli or shinock and load the loot. The base should not be able to not be raided even if they lose all the persons weapons. If all raider scientists are killed then a new timer should be put for the base and the next raid party should be larger and larger until the base is raided. Loot from the raider scientists should be minor explosives and military weapons. Make the scientists red to show aggressive.
NPC
In rust there are large scale events like shinock, heli, and cargo ship, but there aren't to many small events. It seems that small events are player based but what if npc's made small events. Maybe what could happen would be a group of 3-6 scientists roaming the streets and killing all players until they are killed or despawn. They could carry a small box with some minor loot. Rust can seem very barren of life sometimes so maybe more clans other than scientists and bandits could be added to roam the lands and do things. Possibly psychos with the same AI as the killers in the Halloween event. Also maybe some minor farmer looking npcs that are killed and have some materials.
Community
Trust in rust is hard to determine. A way to determine trust is by making a players character tag turn red after they kill a certain amount of players and then after a small amount of time return to white.
Vehicles
In normal society cars are quite similar except for color. That's how rusts cars could be. There should be 3 cars. A normal car with the model you have now. It should be quick but you can get shot out and doesn't hold much. A truck that can carry more loot but is slower and a humvee that is super protective and holds a good amount with a slower speed.
Trapping
In Rust people have wanted to capture other players for a long time. To do this what should happen is that downed players should be able to be bound and gagged by other players. They should be able to keep them on a leash (not in a kinky way) and have them do things to earn their freedom from their captors. To do this, console kill has to be gotten rid of and maybe pressing a certain button with a weapon in hand can cause suicide.
Island Hopping
For island hopping to be a possibility, there has to be some way for servers to partner together . Also player limits will need to be tweaked. Island hopping should be given that heading a different direction will give a different server. A way for modded and non-modded servers to connect could be by cutting the amount of loot by how much the server is modded. This island hopping should let people restart in a different sense. The island hopping should be a 5 minute ride and maybe have some islands to rest that will have some small amount of loot and somewhere to find fuel in case they run out.
This has been all I've thought of that could make rust a much more enjoyable game. Thank you for reading if you got this far. If any Rust Devs wanna hire me for idea production email me. That would be awesome
As soon as I saw "skill tree" I stopped reading immediately. This isn't an RPG, period. Your building assessment? Hell no... It's hard as it is for solos to loot anything, give a group the capability to build on top of rad sites and you will no longer farm scrap. "What about the sea?", you were the one that proposed rafts. Honestly it doesn't feel too bad an idea until you understand raiding would be impossible, especially if it were moving.
Wipeless Rust is a concept FP is working on, but you immediately proposed something rather different. Having scientists raid your base, as if offline raiding wasn't enough, now because you have big loot you'll have scientists at your door telling other players: Yeah this dude has nice shit! Great...
I do not mind having smaller events, could indeed make early game a bit more than just killing everyone.
Your community idea is a big no no from me. It simply ruins the trust aspect that there is in game, which is: Don't trust anyone, be wary. Putting you on edge and so forth.
Vehicles: Not sure anyone wants things like trucks and/or Humvees, but mounting animals has been a constant suggestion. In any case there is some 3D models of vehicles, nothing like those you mentioned though.
Trapping: Read the roadmap.
Island Hopping, a better idea for Wipeless Rust.
All in all this gave me an headache because I don't know if I like this or not, but I sure as hell hate some topics. In any case, I have a small feeling you don't have much play time, you should increase it to really understand what Rust is, because as of the moment you have no idea what suggestions you're giving to this game.
A skill tree wasn't what I meant but rather different things to do in rust than just going no russian on a naked beach.
Currents are to add minor movement to raft bases so that as one is logged off it could wash onto shore and be raided easier. the current won't make a raft base move like a boat but float 1 or 2 meters per minute. Adding a torpedo rocket that can be shot underwater would help in the raiding process and why is it impossible a person would still need a door. If a person has 5 times more decay on a base in a rad site how would they be able to build a monster base in the rad site? Anyway if someone could build a huge base in a rad site they could also just wall it off from people and it would be the same thing. Boat farming and also running along the roads is still a possibility of farming scrap. And for military crates the small events I discussed would handle that.
The idea of wipeless rust and scientists raiding the rich will give you the exact time when scientists will attack. Also if someone attacked after, moving could always be a possibility. Do you really wish to hide aks and c4 in a 2x1?
With the community idea I can see you're someone who shoots first and then asks questions. Also downing someone isn't killing. Do you really want the community to stay toxic as it is? If not how would it be changed?
I totally forgot about riding animals but I can see it's already on the road map. Personally I really don't want have to run for 30 minutes to get somewhere in a digital world. Cars could really help with that.
I did see trapping on the roadmap I just gave it my own look.
Island hopping really could be a better wipeless rust you're right
My time in rust will soon hit 1k and yes I may be a bit biased because I largely play duo or trio but I really think these ideas could make rust more fun.
