This is what I've been saying ever since BF2 failed and got shafted harder with the lootbox controversy. EA is just bad press for Disney at this point, but I don't think the big D cares because they are just out for as much money as possible from the Star Wars universe, Star Wars's rep be damned.
They should've never been given it to begin with.
EA fucking sucks. If disney were smart they'd have 50+ devs making star wars games.
I seriously think people only associate Disney with success because of the MCU and their animation department. Other than that, the company is wholly incompetent and has been making decisions for the past decade that are mediocre at best. Remember, this is the same company who: Acquired Star Wars and IMMEDIATELY ran it into the ground by committing to an annual release schedule without mapping out their movies in advance Spent $400 million to make an Avatar theme park land in the panic after the immediate success of Universal's Wizarding World of Harry Potter Purchased Marvel and Lucasfilm while the ink on the Avatar contract was still wet, meaning they still had to commit to putting a dead franchise in Animal Kingdom, rather than Endor, Dagobah, Wakanda, Indiana Jones, or literally anything else that they now owned Is gradually scrubbing any original content from their theme parks, relying heavily on the implementation of currently hot IP and brand recognition Is currently scrambling to fix the Millennium Falcon ride before the opening of Galaxy's Edge, so that the e-ticket they've been talking up for the past 3 years doesn't amount to a 2-minute motion simulator with a 4 hour wait Uses Marvel comics and cartoons almost exclusively as advertisements for the MCU Protected a serial sexual harasser for years upon years, then fired the star of their big new sitcom and one of their most successful directors over Tweets in an effort to save face Milked their classic IP dry with direct-to-video sequels, purchased Pixar and put Lassetter in charge of Disney Animation to fix it, and is now back to milking their classic IP dry with live-action remakes Forced committee thinking and executive mandate on Pixar of all places, resulting in sequels like Finding Dory and Incredibles 2 which amount to "the first one, but again" Liquidated their entire video games branch because they invested all of their money in Skylanders based off Alice in Wonderland 2 and Maleficent All but refuses to acknowledge Kingdom Hearts despite a ravenous fanbase Gave all of Star Wars to EA and produces no Marvel-related games aside from freemium mobile games and the occasional LEGO game Disney's entire MO is built around short-term gain. They're fucking rolling in it now, but the second the MCU/live-action remake bubble bursts, they'll be back to where they were in the early 2000's, barely scraping by until they bring in some bright-eyed radical who fixes everything before gradually becoming the same old corporate tool they replaced, and then the cycle starts all over again.
Don't give one single company exclusive rights period.
The biggest Problem with Disney is as they do this, they gobble up and lock away so many IPs that they then refuse to sell at all. Meaning we have to wait for it to go bankrupt.
Man, don't talk shit about Incredibles 2 when I'm around. Also, you're going to be eating crow with Avatar 2 comes out and breaks records. I don't expect the story or characters to be any better, but fuck it, I'm still going to see it, and so is nearly everbody else on the planet. The special effects with even better 3D are going to be absolutely unreal. Otherwise, I mostly agree - except that you can't really list the direct to dvd sequels in the same point as the live-action remakes, given that the former was an Eisner decision, and the latter is because of Iger. And everyone fucking hated the direct to DVD sequels, while the live-action remakes (as flawed or outright terrible some of them are) are making so much fucking money that clearly most people are fine with them. It's only nerds who seem to be upset.
The answer is yes.
Can you post sources on the sexual harassment thing?
Pixar's John Lasseter steps down from Disney in wake of #MeToo |.. Apparently John Lassetter was a huge creep who would routinely harass female interns to the point that they literally developed a "move" to avoid unwanted touching during hugs. This had been going on for a while without issue because, surprise, the man spearheaded some of the best/most profitable Disney films of all time and basically pulled their animation division out of the shit during the mid-2000's stream of direct to video trash and constant box office flops. I love and respect a lot of what Disney's made and done in terms of art, animation, cinema, engineering, and curation, but the way they've been running their company as of late has really put them on my shit list.
Did you even read the article you linked? It's only Avatar 4 and 5 that may not happen. Avatar 2 and 3 are already well into production and are absolutely happening. The filming is already done, for god's sake. There's no indication at all Disney is going to drop all the work that's already been done like a rock - especially given that Avatar is a PG-13 franchise. They're just not ready to commit to two further films until the first two sequels prove they are financially viable.
These are all so spot on. We haven't had a good star wars game in YEARS. And COME ON, TELL ME you don't get hyped at the thought of a hero pvp/pve game booting up to this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOabQZHT4qY And yet the only thing that comes to mind is that they've BARELY announced Ultimate Alliance 3 almost ten years after UA2. And it's a switch exclusive.
Disney's whole handling of videogames is a trashfire right now They could've had the Lucasarts handle games for all their IPs Instead, they went the completely opposite way
EA Studios should be treated like garbage. They've been shitting out bad products for so long it's a wonder they're still in business.
You know, I actually didn't read the article, so fair 'nuff then. I will, however, argue that my original statement still stands because Avatar was a super dead franchise when they announced the theme park expansion. None of the sequels had progressed beyond "James Cameron promises like 6 Avatar movies are coming back-to-back like any day now, he's super serious" at that point, so even though the actual park itself has turned out pretty damn cool (thanks pretty much 100% to Joe Rhode and his Imagineers), it was still very much a "what are they even doing" kind of decision when it was first announced.
Their games are shit but since they are such huge company everything they make is guaranteed keep them in business
When it comes to this messy industry these days, nothing cheers me up more than some good ol' EA bashing, and this video fills that gap pretty well. Boycotting this con job of a company for years now is what gives me my sense of pride and accomplishment.
