You could argue that the "gift of nothing" is better for the environment than any other novelty gift wrapped in plastic.
Sure it is plastic waste, so too would be whatever packaging would be on a "real" gift. Let's not forget the gift inside the packaging, whether it's a week down the line or a lifetime away, that gift will also become waste.
