I'm so sorry but I can't find the damn thread. Questions: 1) Where is the thread? 2) Any good Discord channels? 3) Is there any good keyboard+mouse controls? Game looks amazing but with the default controls I can't even pitch or roll which is hurting my spaceboner. Could I, in theory, hook up my Xbox controller alongside the keyboard or do I need a gamepad and joystick?
idk about the rest but you can definitely use an xbox controller (though youll need your kb close by)
There was a Elite Dangerous thread but that was from few years ago and there was a Facepunch ED steam group but that seems kinda dead Yeah, the default control is just ass on M+KB When I used to play on keyboard+mouse I tried to emulate traditional FPS controls as much as possible by binding W+S for forward and backward thrusters A+D for horizontal thrusters and R+F for vertical thrusters to "strafe" Q+E for roll Pitch and yaw to the mouse Joystick isnt required but helps with immersion and you can technically play the game only using gamepad if you want to, or you could use the gamepad for controls and use the keyboard for non essential things like comms and landing gear
I'd strongly recommend looking into applications like VoiceAttack or VoiceBot for playing E:D or games like it, it's fun to use your voice as an input too. I'd also recommend looking for a different game since E:D is a boring slog unless you enjoy spending 60% of your gameplay time docking, undocking and travelling from A-B (Longer if you're trading or exploring), with nothing interesting or emergent really able to occur inbetween.
I'll try that, thanks. I was thinking of maybe mapping movement and combat to the XB1 controller (as secondary options) so I can switch between the keyboard and controller depending on where I am. Also, how the heck do I control the mouse cursor at the spaceport menu without moving my head? Same question for pilot controls, any way to "lock" my head?
I just use the default but since I'm so used to Space Engineers, I bound A and D to making the ship roll while horizontal mouse movement makes the ship point in that direction. If you're having trouble getting used to the controls of the game, it's normal. You need to put a lot of time into the tutorials to understand basic movement and combat. Just docking a ship is extremely challenging at first but if you practice it, it becomes easy.
Whoever was op for the Elite threads over the past five years deleted their account so they're all gone now. I was thinking of creating a new one but like 15 posts were made to the thread in a year. Which is a shame because Beyond has actually added a bit of quality of life to the game. First thing I always do is take the mouse and change it from controlling roll to controlling yaw, then bind QE to roll and have AD be lateral strafe the way I fly in SC. After that all I do is change the binds for "eject all cargo" and "activate heat sink" to keys I won't hit by accident and bind a key for activating FSD to supercruise (separate from "activate FSD and jump to the next system").
