WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday let President Donald Trump enforce his policy barring certain transgender people from joining or staying in the military
as the justices put on hold lower court rulings blocking the plan on constitutional grounds.
The conservative-majority granted the Trump administration’s request to lift injunctions issued by federal judges against the policy while a legal challenge continues in lower courts.
Liberal Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor said they would have kept the injunctions in place blocking the policy.
The justices refused the administration’s request for them to decide the merits of the legal fight even before a California-based federal appeals court already considering the matter is
given a chance to
Trump in 2017 announced a plan to ban transgender people from the military, moving to reverse a policy announced a year earlier under Democratic former President Barack Obama
allowing them for the first time to serve openly and receive medical care to transition genders. Trump, whose administration also has taken other steps to limit the rights of
transgender Americans, cited the “tremendous medical costs and disruption” of having transgender military personnel.
Federal courts blocked the administration’s policy, finding that it likely violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the law.
Seems like the Supreme Court has really been fucking up a lot of decisions lately.
The Supreme Court has never been particularly friendly to minorities except for one period, 1954-1968. For the rest of that time the Supreme Court was generally a piece of shit.
Because there is a conservative majority I assume
Truman desegregated the military with an Executive order so this will probably be allowed.
The supreme court is high tier for one of the worst institutions in this country by design.
By design the Supreme Court is one of the most important institutions in this country. Like any government office or agency, it can do a lot of damage if corrupted - as neocons tend to do.
Get ready for more of this as we continue down the Trump age of supreme court picks, with possibly the odds being stacked even worse if he gets a third by the end of this presidency.
Makes it all the more tragic that its function is poorly designed to begin with.
A "balanced court" was all the rage among conservatives but suddenly there's not a peep from those advocates (yes, ones that are still on FP now, and were arguing for balance back then), funny how that works. How does this go unmentioned so much?
Merrick Garland would have provided balance. Gorsuch and Kavanaugh are illegitmate and must be ordered to resign under a new Democrat president.
Just in case anyone is unaware and thinks this may be a vaguely valid reason, the US military spends at least 10 times as much on viagra to treat erectile dysfunction. This is purely an attack on a minority for the sake of appealing to bigots.
I recall @Sgman91 advocating for a balanced court way back when Merrick Garland process was happening
I want a conservative court just like others want a liberal court.
What I said is that delaying the vote for the reason of ensuring a balanced court is legitimate. If the democrats do the same thing with their majority, you won't see me calling them out for it.
Good to know you think the Senate abdicating its duty for political reasons is a-ok.
Funny how you never said "I want a conservative court" back then

Always arguing as if you wanted balance lol

This one is particularly telling in light of what you just said. You want everything to be conservative (you've described the SC appointments as the most important thing a president can do by far), but Obama is a monster for not compromising.
Conservatives have no principles
No no, sgman's not a conservative. He just really, really, really, really, REALLY likes defending Trump and his cronies because it'd be boring otherwise.
He just posts "interesting" opinions
Because that would ensure people have civil rights, Republicans don't want that.
The problem is when you're paid to eat shit you redefine it as food and tell yourself you're #winning.
There's literally no reason to do this. Trans people aren't a tactical liability or something, and I'd love to hear why people think this is a good idea.
You mean "I want a court that pushes my exclusionary views over your equal ones"
You don't have to beat around the bush, just say what you mean.
Hi there. I still believe in a balanced court and think the current court is too stacked to the conservative side. Anything else you need?
I thought that the first attempt at doing this failed so badly that transgender people became a protected class?
one has to wonder what all those other courts and pentagon reports got wrong
Can I ask for a cappuccino or is that too far
What about some hot coco? I have the ingredients for that.
next democrat supermajority, bunp the court to 13, give the republicans a choice of a couple centrists and if they threaten to boycott it, fill it with the most leftist judges you can find
thats a terrible precedent to set as has been mentioned every time someone brings this terrible suggestion up
Pretty sure it will be mathematically impossible for Democrats to win a supermajority in both chambers unless the economy explodes/
