You know, what's completely typical about this situation is that it is, once again, Democrats holding the republicans back from their desperate attempts to shoot themselves and everyone else in this country in the foot. The Democrats are fine with increasing border security via sane and effective means. They're fine with taking measures which would legitimately help to prevent people from entering the country illegally. They've said as much in no uncertain terms. The sad thing is that the GOP has tentatively managed to change the politics of the shutdown with this proposal. It has totally staunched the approval/disapproval bleedout that we've seen for the last few weeks. It hasn't reversed it, but Republicans are now no longer in a polling tailspin. Like it or not, I think a Republican bill in the Senate to end the shutdown can muddy the waters for Democrats in the House quite a lot. It already has. McConnell was basically in hiding before this.

Let's say you're a member of the GOP base and you watch Fox News. In that case, the southern border is a huge threat and we need a wall there to stop all the bad people and drugs coming over the border. In this case, Mitch sounds like he's desperately pleading for the Dems to come to the table. This statement is meant for these people. Now, if you live in reality it's clear that it's a useless solution to a manufactured crisis and Mitch is so full of shit I'm surprised he was even able to give this statement. I keep hearing how most people oppose the wall, so this seems to be where most of the country is on the issue.
