This article itself is great, but I'm posting it in mainly because of how fucking surreal it is for me personally. I've shared this before, but: I knew Sean. He wasn't just an acquaintance - he went to the same fucking homeschool co-op as me back in Connecticut. He played the shitty gamemaker games I still have on my PC hard drive. And he was every bit as christian and conservative back then as I was. His dad fucking taught abstinence programs at local churches. Quite a personal evolution, not unlike my own. (Well, apart from the fact that he's famous and influential, and I'm not.)
I love that we finally have a generation ready to fight back against the coming late-stage capitalism, but just reading McElwee's transcript is rather insufferable. I would rather listen figureheads who are a little more, level-headed. I'm also worried about pursuing 'leftist populism' and leading us to more demagoguery just from the other side.
Frankly, I kind of agree. But given that he is extremely influential in millennial politics - he fucking coined #AbolishICE - I kind of understand why he's gotten such a head on his shoulders. Most in his situation would. That's why I'm impressed that, thus far, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been handling her newfound stardom with stride. She's extremely gracious compared to many of her peers, and yet equally uncompromising on the things that matter, like calling out Trump's racism for what it is. I hope she continues on this path, because if she does, we might have a real winner on our hands by the time she's old enough to legally run for president.
Who are you kidding? AOC has had it get to her head and said plenty of dumb shit and done plenty of virtue signalling.
She will hopefully calm down to a more level-headed state. I like what she stands for but huge new found popularity does this to people and it takes a while to get used to.
Let's get Sean McElwee to join FP
