Kingdom Hearts does not have a chronology as much as it has the insane scribblings of a high fanboy. You know, except officially.
last time avgn was chronologically confused there were still 8 megaman games
Can't wait when Mighty No 9 is old enough to do an AVGN episode of.
and I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't know about anyone else but I ended up borrowing either the game or the needed as they came out and I loved it, I hung out at my friend's place to play the first on on his ps2 until my cousin lent me his copies of 1 and two in the wrong order over 3 easters back and forth. It gave me this communal feeling and although I'm distant from most of those people now, I will always cherish them because of that, us all trying to get all the aspects of the story, hell I remember when I had no money and my psp's battery died, my friend just took the battery out of his and his copy of birth by sleep and gave it to me. That's all sappy I know, and I realise that this is probably not the common experience, but that chase and reliance on community to track down the mystified games I heard about in game magazines just made the games all the more rewarding when I finally got to play them, gave them the same confused, dream like feel aspects of their lore and story have. About 6 or 8 years ago now when I finally got 1 and 2 as EB games was clearing out the last of their PS2 stock I was giddy, yeah it's a result of poor business decisions and I'm so grateful for the complete editions for existing and giving everyone the opportunity to just sit down and play them, but you can't say it didn't enhance the experience if you were a specific sort of person. I mean I'm also 100% a horrible Kingdom Hearts stan who considers them one of the greatest series of all time so lol. It is a giant mess tbh
... And my friends tell me I am a Kingdom Hearts fanboy. Speaking of the video, I'd say he was rather, I don'w know, tame about it, but it centered the issue perfectly nonetheless. It's also worth mentioning that the main issue with the Kingdom Hearts series is not cronological consistency and spin-offs abundance, but plot consistency and accessibility
Oh I am the biggest Kingdom Hearts fanboy I have ever met or interacted with online, it's what got me into RPG games, Anime, got me to care about the story in video games, got me into seeking out and becoming someone who listens to music more than just "whatever's on the radio/spotify 100"... KH kinda shaped my whole life. He was surprisingly tame but I feel most blow it out of proportion or pretend it doesn't exist, it was a happy medium for me. The constant retcons are difficult to consume and as BestGuyEver (4 hour kingdom hearts lecture dude) said, you have to play them in order or else none of it makes sense, and to put them in a chronological plotted line is messy to say the least as each instalment shifts rules of the world while only making 80% of things still make sense rather than all of it.
I had a friend in grade school who was kind of a serial mythomaniac, at one point he talked about the KH series, it was such a clusterfuck and combining Disney characters with anime stuff sounded so weird that I thought he was just making shit up. Same thing happened with Super Smash Bros, massive crossovers seemed like such a strange concept to me.
SE probably should have at least stepped in at some point and made sure that at least they had titles that didn’t fucking need explanation. 358/2 Days continues to be the standout worst subtitle I have ever seen in any media that wasn’t intentionally silly
I have a great question about this topic: Is there a good video summarizing the entire story of KH for someone who has never played KH and want to play KH3 without playing previous games?
You should really just play the other games. But if you really don't want to
this one seems pretty alright (though i say this having never played KH so keep that in mind) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjiHufVEc7g
I reccomend playing 1 and 2. You’ll get enough out of it to get the just of things to play KH3
In your defense, both Kingdom Hearts and Super Smash sound absolutely ludicrous on paper.

The punchline of this video is that it's all real.
As far as I know, Kingdom Hearts III will have a video compilation or something you'll be able to acess from the main menu about the events of all the past games. I don't know if this is going to be in the game at launch or if it's one of those additional videos (including the true epilogue) they are going to release via patch between January and February
I don't know how much cocaine has been snorted during the development of KH games but I can only imagine it's measured in buckets.
It's so odd seeing james to a sponsorship spot. AVGN is literally older than youtube, and this is something very contemporary, it's so weird.
Kingdom hearts is best if you're not taking it's story too seriously. Fucks sake, it's a sorta-crossover of final fantasy and Disney. If you're pouring a lot of time into theories, seek help? Like don't get me wrong, I enjoy the games myself (although I don't think I'll be getting 3 until like, a good time after the fact) but I do take them at face value
It's best to just have an idea of what's going on, but not entirely. All you need to know for KH3 is Organization XIII (the bad guys) is trying to bring back the χ-blade with the 13 shards of darkness to get to Kingdom Hearts, which is a source of ultimate power and is the heart of all worlds, and Sora is trying to stop them.
gary has treatened to end facepunch more times than kh's sequels. and the reasons are as elaborated as kh plot.
As I've gotten older I realized nowadays Kingdom Hearts is only entertaining for the gameplay. The story is a complete, near-incomprehensible mess that doesn't even feel consistent with itself at times, and the hallmark of the series is what ironically is what holding it back from being greater. It wants to tell this grand story spanning years, across multiple characters, but it's punctuated by mandatory intermissions of hyper-condensed versions of popular Disney films you've probably already seen. And while cute, they serve a litttle more than glorified advertisements in game form, especially since they often do not turn the story wheel in a meaningful way. Ultimately, when it actually comes to the story of the series, moments with Disney and pals aren't moving the plot, or are the interesting figures in the story. The original characters and worlds are where the story is focused, and the most interesting things happen.
Dream Drop Distance is where I gave up on taking the story seriously, and I actually like the convoluted mess that is Kingdom Hearts' story. I returned to the game after taking a break only to realize I'd stopped playing right at the final boss fights, and the plot from their cutscenes made me say "what the fuck" for the first time in all the games I've played in the franchise. Still looking forward to KH3 and hope that they end up making the story more convoluted than before. And just when you think it's over, make another batch of side games that further convolute the plot, eventually getting to the point where they get Haley Joel Osment to reprise his character from The Sixth Sense in a Kingdom Hearts game, effectively acting as a sequel to the film and still feature a twist, as all M. Night Shyamalan stories do.
I'll get my hands on the thing tomorrow, but I can already tell Kingdom Hearts III is going to be the Guns of the Patriots of the Kingdom Hearts series. Which may be a good or a bad thing, depending on your point of view
The best thing is that James is so confused he forgot a game. Two, if you want to get really obscure, but the second one is straight up non-canon.
Okay, but where does X-Blades fit into the Kingdom Hearts timeline?
the real story of kingdom hearts isn't all wiki articles and time lines, imo, it's the weirdly effective emotional value on a game-per-game basis. don't you fool round like sora turning into a heartless didn't make your cold dead heart twitch, you cowards
