[Australia] Coober Pedy local council sacked over maladministration
4 replies, posted
A remote South Australian council has been sacked and an administrator appointed because of rising debts and damning reports.
The District Council of Coober Pedy was subject to a scathing Ombudsman's report, which found it had committed maladministration because it entered a $198.6 million power purchase agreement without a competitive tender process.
South Australian Local Government Minister Stephan Knoll said the council's financial position made it untenable.
"There has been a documented failure of the Coober Pedy council to be able to effectively manage its finances over a long period of time," he said.
"We haven't seen any demonstration from the council that they're actually going to improve their financial position without help.
"There are a huge number of irregularities around record keeping and good governance that really posed a whole heap of questions about how this council was being operated."
When the Ombudsman made his finding against the council in July last year, he called it: "one of the most serious examples of maladministration in public administration I have observed since the relevant provisions of the ICAC Act were enacted".

This follows the Ipswich City Council also being sacked last year. For international posters here: The council governments are the only local governments in Australia; there aren’t any counties, school districts or any other special-purpose districts.
Ha! I said this years ago. Let me dig up the thread.
Haha jesus. The tender would have been $85 million less expensive if it were made on the open market. What the fuck were the council thinking
"Look how big our green penis is."
Probably thought it would bring in tourists or something.
Ding, ding, ding. Should have just used Google to begin with.
