https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/22/video-game-revenue-tops-43-billion-in-2018-an-18-jump-from-2017/ $35b is from software sales, subscriptions and in-game purchases. That surpasses the entire global film box office for 2018, as the article points out.
Only $43 Billion? Those poor poor shareholders gamers can we add more predatory microtransations?
And still it's not enough to satisfy publishers or their shareholders. Gotta get at least 5 million copies sold in a week, a metascore of at least 85, and have microtransactions, a season pass, and additional DLC for your game to be considered a minor success. If even one of these things is missing then dismantle the development team and buyout another. We're not making any money if we aren't making all the money.
This seems to include mobile games though, and most of those exsist solely to harvest user's data and money, which they are extremely adept at.
It's only a matter of time until the movie industry and other businesses start seeing lucrative dollar signs in their eyes for gaming rather than spite for "not being artistic enough" and really start trying to cash in.
This is the biggest problem with them is they fully believe in "If your not growing, your dying". There are some parts of that which are true. But frankly, you can't grow forever and you can't grow nonstop. It is actually impossible. The economy only has a finite amount of money, and you only have a finite amount of customers.
You know what grows non-stop? Cancer, and it's generally considered a bad thing.
I'm of the belief that shareholders are scum sucking parasites that ruin everything they touch.
Its mentality thats ruining everything including the planet and countries. It isn't sustainable to keep having constant growth
You can continue to grow forever at a steadily decreasing rate as you optimize your business further.
No, you will eventually hit a wall, either due to market forces, your complete domination of the world market leading to no more customers, or the end of civilization caused by your endless greed.
Greedy publishers and producers have made it an industry problem.
