https://www.dexerto.com/overwatch/blizzard-permanently-cuts-the-price-of-overwatch-303398 How long until F2P?
Blizzard doesn't release concurrent player numbers so it's all speculation, anecdotes, and possibly confirmation bias, but nobody I know of that owns Overwatch, myself included, still plays it. Personally I played the shit out of Overwatch, I've played maybe 200 hours of it overall, and I burned out on it harder than any other game I've ever played.
Overwatch is one of the few games to legitmately make me salty, it's practically designed to be bullshit.
Is it really a surprise? Games been out for nearly 3 years
Considering this is the first time it's had a permanent price drop? I'd guess a while. Game is nearing 3 years old. Staying launch price that long seems solid. The problem to me isn't needing sales though. F2P games seem to go that route to get interest from people who didn't buy it. OW has a problem where shit tons of people bought it, but now hate the game. F2P doesn't seem like a solution.
The design intent was originally to be a fast quake-like experience, but then they gave almost every Hero in it some manner of hard or soft crowd control that actively prevents you playing the game the way they said they wanted it to be played, and they've not fucking stopped adding more and more CC into it. It's fucking ridiculous.
Overwatch's movement is also really terrible. It's really slow, has virtually no acceleration or deceleration, and there are no advanced movement techniques.
Great, now there's gonna be even more smurf accounts
Air movement feels like if you wad up a plastic bag and try and trow it. It'll go maybe a foot or two before it opens up and decelerates instantly. That's exactly how it feels like to move through the air in overwatch.
I don't, I never played TF2. But remember how Quake's movement is a constant balancing act between speed and maneuverability, where going the maximum ground movement speed, which would be nutso fast in any other game, is slow enough to be a death sentence? You have to constantly be landing your strafejumps in order to stay above base movement speed, but in doing so you make your own aiming more difficult and you become less maneuverable. Smack yourself into a wall or a tiny outcropping of map geometry and congratulations, you lost all your momentum. And when you lose your momentum, you're dead. Not to mention that aim direction influences strafejumping, so if you're engaging an enemy, you can potentially be flicking back and forth between your enemy and the optimal aim direction for your next jump. Also most of the viable weapons are very slow projectiles so you have to lead every shot. When you die in Quake, it's not because the other guy picked a character that counters yours. It's because he's hopping sideways across the map at 40 miles per hour, and you aren't. but nah, in Overwatch, the dedicated rocket jump ability loses all of its inherited momentum after one (1) second because if it didn't, that would just be way too interesting and fun.

The biggest issue I had was that, as someone who loved Pharah in OW, so much of the geometry was designed to not be walked on. I think it was the Temple of Anubis level, or Volskya industries, but it had plenty of rooftops that a few characters could reach, but standing on them was like ice. You were constantly sliding towards the nearest edge. If you don't want people to be able to go there, just make the building so tall it can't be climbed. The few interesting characters in OW would prove too challenging for the rest of the cast to deal with, so they're nerfed and made impotent. It's such stupid design.
I was going to say: If that was the design intent, then they failed hilariously hard. I have personally never seen a game whose gameplay is so boring to watch, because everyone moves so painfully slow. I have legitimately watched Chess gameplay that's more exciting than Overwatch. And that's to say nothing of actually playing the game.
I know how this feels. Thought I'd give it a go after playing TF2 for over 3k hours and got bored of OW after 3 months. I'm level 20 or so. I partially blame how similar it is to TF2 (the aforementioned 3k hours didn't help), but the repetitive maps (custom map support is what keeps me playing TF2) and punishing experience if your "team" decides to piss about while you face off with a complete squad (mics n'all - which happened far too often for my liking) is just not fun at all. I don't think it helped OW just felt a lot slower than TF2. All the characters moved at around the same speed (give or take) and only really pushed themselves ahead of the rest through abilities. Compare that to TF2 where you have noticeably different movement speeds out the gate (Scout to Heavy), along with different strategies as a result just felt a lot better as you could experiment with movement and gameplay style a lot better. I just didn't feel that at all in OW.
I vividly remember first playing junkrat, dropping that conc mine on the ground, blasting myself into the air in a moment of glorious ecstasy, only to have my dreams crushed into dust instantly as he screeches to a halt and sinks like a rock.

Overwatch frustrates the hell out of me. I'll play it a little and then take a break for months at a time. It has so many badly designed aspects in order to try and make it exciting to watch and make you feel powerful, but it just leads to plenty of ults just being I WIN buttons, and after so long it's apparent that even at the highest level of play the team that blows the most ults at once wins. Not to mention Blizzard's balancing strategy of "Oh? That's too strong? We'll make that character useless and... I dunno, buff the ever-loving shit out of this guy?"
Would you like to try Rocket League to maximize your sodium chloride intake?
Über Update hmm
I tried playing a few months back and even during my matches to get a rank I was being bombarded with salt. No thank you.
Overwatch always makes me irrationally angry because it's such a poorly designed game. The balancing is absolute shit, the community is horrific, and it doesn't help that all the characters have the collective personality of a flaccid penis.
The characters in Overwatch are more two-dimensional than paper, honestly.
I'm not gonna act like I'm normally a totally mature person who never get irrationally mad at video games, but Overwatch drove me so above and beyond angry that I ended up breaking a monitor and just had to dump the game and competitive multiplayer shooters as a whole. I absolutely despise the ever constant presence of CC, hard counters to characters, and the fucking terrible ultimates system. That game is 100% designed only from the perspective of the person using the character in an advantageous position and it's like they give no fucking thought to how it feels to lose.
I think overwatch is pretty fun.
Overwatch has appealing character design, but beyond that the game never interested me. I vaguely remember people were saying that the game was fun and that it would get content, balance, and story/character development over time. 3 years later and they've added a few maps and 8 heroes. And unless you count the dozens of limited time event skins as content, it doesn't look to me like they've added much in the line of meaningful content to the game. Unless I haven't been paying enough attention to the game's updates. From my understanding the game's hero balance is shit and map design is severely lacking. As for story development I guess they made a couple of characters gay? And if you don't like it they'll keep making more characters gay until you do. Even Bastion. Maybe they'll spice it up and make Roadhog a transgendered character. And even if I were interested in the game I would be banned because I only want to play a select few heroes. Because that's considered toxic behavior.
I don't think Overwatch lends itself to longevity. It's pretty obvious that the focus is on new, new, new. New characters! New maps! New skins! Except the foundation that holds it all up sucks ass. Map design on old maps sucks, but rarely ever gets fixed. The lore barely matters. Old characters are constantly in need of redesigns and yet they keep throwing wild cards in to the mix when they already had so many characters it'd be insanely hard to balance. New skins add nothing to the game except the most token reason to keep playing but I don't think anyone cares about the skins anymore. Event game modes do add some spice, but they've become routine and I don't know many people who go "Oh shit I gotta jump on this one" anymore. Nothing has been done to address the fact that Overwatch is fun maybe 50 percent of the time and the other 50 percent is an absolute slog. No multiplayer game lasts forever, but Blizzard being focused on jangling shiny keys in front of us instead of fixing the fucking game means people are just gonna get tired of it. I'm reminded of how before the game was released, they were shocked out how many people were asking what the end of life plan for this game was going to be, and they didn't know how to answer because they hadn't even considered it yet. I think the end for Overwatch will come sooner than they think. THAT SAID, I also think it's not as bad as people say it is yet.
Literally no There's a lot of really weird lore about OW from people that dont play it What
I love Overwatch and me and my friends have been playing since release. It was only a matter of time before the price decrease.
That's literally the only thing you get from playing: lootboxes. An entire leveling system? Yeah, that's just for lootbox progression. It means absolute bollocks since it is primarily based on playtime. Currency? Used to buy items, from the lootbox. Which are only obtainable from lootboxes, of course. Achievements? Gives you experience, for lootbox. There are very few map updates, new gameplay modes or a slivers of good writing, because those are not lootbox-oriented. Every single update is focused on skins, sprays, and the likes to stuff-up the fucking lootboxes. There is ZERO incentive to play the game, since there is no sense of progression other than your personal skill. Just another game on the ever-growing list of games tainted by microtransactions and corporate greed.
That's why you got to make them gay to stay relevant.
