So host another rigged election?
I suspect it will be monitored, any funny business and Germany/Spain will certainly back Guaido.
Hasn't the Venezuelan Congress recognized the opposition leader? Why isn't Germany taking that into account?
Germany and Spain most likely want to give Maduro one last chance to prove that Venezuelans are genuinely behind him, or otherwise lose the election, and hopefully step down and peacefully transition power. It’s all well and good that the Venezuelan Congress has recognised Guaido as the rightful President, but further civil unrest (or even a civil war) is bound to happen if Maduro holds firm. And if other countries keep on recognising Guaido as the legitimate President without providing Maduro with one last chance to prove his legitimacy, that may further embolden Maduro to hold onto his power in spite of ‘foreign aggressors’ (his words, not mine).
Venezuela currently has 2 Congresses, the National Assembly which is the original and is backing Guaido, and the Constituent National Assembly which was created by Maduro, stuffed with his supporters which in turn stripped power from the National Assembly.
Considering that Russia and China are sticking behind Maduro, straight up recognizing the opposition might just be stirring the pot more. It's playing it safe, because I think Maduro will try and hold power for as long as possible than hold elections.
