https://arstechnica.com/science/2019/01/anti-vaccine-advocates-appointed-to-minnesota-autism-council-after-measles-outbreak/ Officials in Minnesota have appointed anti-vaccine advocates to a newly formed state council on autism, sparking controversy in the wake of a record measles outbreak in the state. Though the council is not designed to take up the issue of vaccination, it has been ensnared in controversy due to the anti-vaccine sentiments it includes, according to a report in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. At least two of the council’s more than 30 members are skeptical of vaccine safety and oppose compulsory immunizations. One of those skeptical members, Wayne Rohde, was one of three initial people Abeler appointed to the council. Rohde was charged with helping to shape the council and with picking other members. The state of Minnesota has been a battleground for anti-vaccine sentiments. For years, anti-vaccine advocates had pounced on fears of autism there, largely in the state’s Somali immigrant communities. This fueled a measles outbreak in 2017, which was largest the state had seen in decades.
These people should be exiled from civilisation tbh.
They should bevaccinatedbefore hand to ensure theyat least live healthy lives
I don't have the words to yell about how intensely stupid this is. This is like having one of BP's head honchos in an environmental organization after the fucking Deepwater Horizon disaster.
I'm crying laughing holy shit how can this even be possible this is insulting to the last degree considering how severe the antivaxx problem is.
My cousin has Autism (high fuctioning). Am I to understand these cunts are suggesting he is not a real person? Fuck them.
This is some wild conspiracy shit and yet I honestly believe it, anti-vaxers really are this delusional and fucked.
these people are a product of libertarianism and bogus science. We made them.
I'm curious, is this movement starting to spread to Europe as well or are measles only starting to spread in the US?
Europe is affected massively actually Because of Anti https://forum.facepunch.com/sh/btxwe/Because-of-Anti-Vaxxers-37-People-in-Europe-Have-Died-of-Measles-This-Year/1/ Measles outbreak in Europe could be brought to U.S
Y'know, I'm autistic and it's really not that bad. Certainly far more pleasant than FUCKING MEASLES.
As someone who is very much thankful they aren't autistic, its sad to see so many people misrepresenting autism as this horrible illness or 'retardation'. As if autism somehow equates to being stupid. Autism doesn't make you this uncontrollable maniac who slaps their belly and screams all day, every time. Many people with Autism are perfectly normal and live good lives, they just have to work with how autism changes their brains is all. Having positive support is how they'll be rid of the issues. but then you have anti-vaxxers, who treat it worse than polio. They'd rather their kid suffer in agony than have autism. They're warped in the head at best.
My state is pretty weird, its suppose to be smarter than most other states with better funded education programs. But at the same time we enable crazies to do stuff like this, I don't really get it.
Isn't one of the larger """"arguments"""" for anti-vaxx that the government is putting brain control serum or whatever other dumb shit in it. Then why would you put a vehemently anti-government group on a government board you troglodyte inbred fuckmuffins?
Anti-vaxxers would rather their kids spend their entire life in the iron lung than be on average just slightly to moderately socially stunted. Honestly it's sickening.
It's very much a problem in Europe, in fact in many ways it's been a threat to European health longer than American. Measles was considered fully eradicated in the US in the year 2000 thanks to mandatory vaccine laws, the disease was only recently (as in 5 years ago) reintroduced to the USA by anti vaxxers going to areas where the disease hadn't been eradicated and carrying it back. Meanwhile in the UK and Russia, mandatory vaccination didn't happen on a large enough scale to eradicate the diseases and so the anti vax movement immediately caused an increase in preventable infections. Ironically enough, America being so well vaccinated in the late 20th century is exactly what allowed the anti vax movement to happen, we eradicated or decimated enough preventable diseases that these charlatans didn't suffer the consequences of their actions until well over a decade later.
Reminder that the people who this is hurting is uneducated migrants being specifically misled to not vaccinate their children by criminals Minnesota is experiencing its largest measles outbreak since the 1990s following a targeted and intense effort by anti-vaccine groups there to spread the false belief that vaccinations cause autism. As of Thursday, health officials reported 41 confirmed cases, nearly all unvaccinated children from a Somali immigrant community in Hennepin County. The community has for years been a target of anti-vaccine groups, aided by Andrew Wakefield, a fraudulent former physician.
Actually. I'm past giving a fuck. Go a-fucking-head. Try it out. See what happens here. Let this run its course and stand strong as an example to the rest of the world. Sometimes you just gotta let idiots be idiots and let them make an example of themselves.
UUUGHHHHHHH I'm on the spectrum where I'm only socially slow but highly passionate about design, so I'm very lucky. But even if vaccination consistantly caused strong autism, not doing it will take your child's chances of a functional and healthy life away. That is SO FAR WORSE than having communication and learning disadvantages. I know the science behind vaccinations isn't simple - which is why it's so easy to spread misinformation about it - but people being so bull-headed about the subject isn't helping anyone either. If they would look they would quickly find at most a dozen reputable papers refuting key aspects of Wakefields initial report. But most anti-vaxxers (including my mom) have become so untrusting of this that I don't know if it would even sway them...
Thats not how this wil work sadly. The kids suffer here, not the anti-vax freaks
Their actions kill innocent children. Don't give up and let them loose, charge them and lock them up for assisting murders
Autism isn't prevalent enough in the world for this to make much sense. There's a lot of anti-vax parents and communities out there who have had zero interaction with genuinely autistic kids and are just being scared by fear mongering and propaganda. If they actually gave a shit about Autism as an illness they'd have put some effort in to research it. And if they know someone who has an Autistic child that parent would likely know a thing or two about it due to any medical assistance they get. This trend has only really spiked more recently since the Internet came into play. Where spreading misinformation and fear is really easy when your target audience are people who aren't quite academic enough to actually research things. That used to require door to door knocking and leafleting, now it just requires some hastily slapped together infographics.
Based on "one" advocate group.
WEll sure. but we all know that's not what's gonna happen. It's gonna end up running its course, whether we want it to or not, and the only remotely positive outcome will be that it'll stand as a stark example for everyone else. Sure, it also bothers me that kids half the world away are gonna die due to a culture that worships and follows stupid ideas by stupid people. But i'm not really in a position to save America from its own cultural brain-rot. All i can do is try to look at the positives and the only positive is that this shit isn't happening near me. America's trajectory as a country and culture since 9/11 is going to stand as a stark historical warning to both future governments, but also other countries in the present, of what happens if you just let fear rule and you just follow the loudest screamer with no regard as to what they're striving for. Who knew drenching a whole country in 24/7 angst and panic would have negative repercussions to the general ability to focus on and digest complicated issues in a timely manner, when everyone is pressuring everyone else to make "the correct" knee-jerk decisions. What am i supposed to do here? My sympathies won't help and i think caring if i offer them is kinda moot in the grans scheme of things. I don't care anymore. this is unfortunately gonna run its course and become another example of why not listening to reason is gonna get people killed.
Libertarianism doesn't teach people that vaccines are the boogeyman, that's just false association and combining things you don't like to bash the other even when they're unrelated
