WASHINGTON (AP) — Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney says President Donald Trump is prepared for another government shutdown if Congress won’t work with him to
secure the southern border.
Mulvaney says Trump doesn’t want to see federal agencies closed again and doesn’t want to declare a national emergency either. But he says Trump is prepared to do either.
He says Trump agreed to reopen the government for three weeks to give Democrats a chance to negotiate. Mulvaney says some Democrats agree with Trump’s plan to better secure
the border, but said they couldn’t work with the White House as long as there was a partial government shutdown.
Prepared is a strong word for Trump...
Trump lost so much leverage after caving the first time. What would make things different the second time?
Old man, did you not learn your lesson?
Stupid asshat
Know what? Do it.
Piss off Federal Workers more. Disrupt the economy and put our national security in question again. Fucking do it you pathetic bastard, maybe a second time people will realize he doesn't give a shit about the "common man", he cares about his own vanity bullshit and hiding his racist feelings behind it.
Only this time, everyone strikes on day 1 instead of day 34.
For once, I am holding out hope that McConnell will actually do his damn job and allow the Senate to override Trump on this. He got absolutely hammered by his party during this last shutdown. They were outright screaming at him at a GOP congressional dinner in the final days of this one. Trump's only play right now is to try and follow through on his "emergency powers" declaration, which will inevitably be blocked by a federal court and get tied up in legal battles for months before likely being shot down in the long run. This is the only option Trump has that lets him save face and pretend like he's fighting the "good" fight to build the wall.
Of course, if it DOES somehow get approved by the courts, it opens up a whole can of worms by significantly expanding the definition of "emergency" powers for the president. There'd be nothing stopping the next Democratic president from declaring something like Climate Change as a national emergency and redirecting billions towards that. McConnell and the GOP have to realize this -- whether they care is another question entirely.
He also said he was 'prepared' to have a months-long shutdown and we all know how that ended up.
Deliberately shutting down the government again would be the dumbest possible move, especially with how the GOP resorted to infighting during the final stretch.
I can only hope voters remember this next year.
"This time I won't claim responsibility before it starts!"
I'd love it if he did that. His approvals got destroyed by the first one.
Get a load of this strategic mastermind, fellas. Having just lost a big fight because everyone was blaming him for the shutdown, his opening move going into round two is to basically say "you can also blame me for the next shutdown".

Yeah I honestly don't see how it's a winning move for Trump to say that's he's ready for another shutdown. It (rightly) gives people the impression that he's causing it, and it ain't popular. A surprisingly large share blamed the democrats for the first one (with few blaming the republicans), but Trump was even more blamed.
I'd say it's a bluff. If it goes on that long, I don't doubt that he'll just declare a state of emergency to do it and claim victory as it gets shut down by the courts.
Whose surprised? A Nnarcissist can't admit they're was wrong and accept defeat
So when's the general strike?
From who, federal employees? The same ones that just went a month without pay? Why would they suddenly go on strike, leaving them without further pay?
The southern border is pretty unsecured right now. I mean after all with the coast guard and border protection not getting paid to check and intercept drug shipments its not hard to see why.
If a decently sized corporation decided to withhold pay from workers for a month because of a squabble amongst the board of directors and then have the audacity to expect its employees to keep working pro bono they would be lynched. Why wouldn't they go on strike given that a second shut down would be a repeat of well documented misery? The government doesn't get to have it easy; if you want to act like a child then don't expect your employees to put up with it.
If the hundreds of thousands of workers that make up the bureaucracy and administration of the United States government went on strike they would hold all the cards, and they would be able to secure their rights and financial security unless Trump decided to perform something truly inhumane. What've they got to lose given the suffering they've been put through thus far?
He really fucked himself hard when he proudly took full responsibility for the shutdown. He basically removed his own ability to play the lie and blame game, and now it's simply a hostage situation.
of course he is, everybody told him he lost and he's mr. double-downs so unless he gets more than he asked for in 3 weeks we're shut down.
Then the sheer unreliability of the government could bring recession.
I fear that the lesson Trump has learned is "I can shut the government down if I reopen it briefly before things get too bad".
"See the government doesn't work!"
"Ya because you made it not work!"
Ahahahaha.
Cause the first time went so well.
Fucking loon.
The voters are the people blaming Schumer and Pelosi.
I hope the Democrats learned not to cave in
Air traffic being shutdown would be nightmarish levels of economic damage even for a couple of days.
That's exactly what was going to happen, like I've said in previous threads I have family in the Airline Industry, ATC at Minneapolis and Atlanta were coordinating a mass call in sick day as a protest, on Saturday and Sunday respectively. This is why suddenly out of the blue Trump agrees to a deal and gets it signed a few hours before Friday ends.
