The article has some really interesting points to make and the data isn't necessarily making this out to be a plain win for the Democrats:

Though it *is* destroying Trump's approval rating pretty fast:

The fact that the 'blame republicans' line was going down is fucking baffling.
It went down at the same time the "blame Trump" line went up and the "blame Democrat" line stayed pretty much constant so it's just people switching from blaming Republicans as a whole to blaming Trump.
It's a lot easier to blame individuals than organisations, especially when there's a couple examples from the organisation that you can point to as not following along with everyone else.
Mitch McConnell laid pretty low during the whole shutdown, even though he could have solved the whole thing.
perhaps that's why republicans aren't getting the blame
Which is terrifying, because it means that they have pretty much successfully did what they have repeatedly done by propping idiots up to power and then using them as the face of the group to put blame on. People are saying Trump is a symptom of the problem but the Republicans have pretty much successfully separated the image of Trump from Republicans if that graph is anything to go by. This means they can just prop ANOTHER piece of shit person with no consequences to the party themselves because even when the person is completely endorsed by Republicans, their user base still blames the Democrats more for that person than the Republicans themselves lmao.
They'll forget Trump existed and nominate Ted Cruz in 2024.
Everyone hates Ted Cruz, even people who work with him.
people believe that nancy pelosci and chuck schumer were as much responsible for the shutdown as trump was, there are so many people that just can't believe the republicans can ever do anything wrong
I like that Trump can say explicitly that he would take credit for a shutdown yet a significant chunk of Americans will blame everyone but Trump.
I'm just wondering what he did in July to spike the approval rating
New poll showed exactly 33% of Americans will definitely or probably vote for him in 2020, the poll was done amid the shutdown.
Wait what
25.7% of all eligible voters voted for trump in 2016 though, aka 55.7% turnout total of which 46% voted for Trump.
If 33% will definitely or probably vote then he's gonna get a shitload more votes? Can you source the article?
love how the repubs still manage to dodge blame after doing this 4 times since '95
And as such, a third of the American population is irredeemably stupid. I wonder whether the trend of that is growing or shrinking.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. At least he picked the choice where not _everyone_ is damned along with him... At least for now. Jury's still out when the 35 days are up.

It's just voters, not all people
I can answer why. It's because people have really short memory, and for most people, the only time it happened before (or hell, in their lifetimes) was under Obama.
You know. Because people are stupid like that and probably think that Obama was the guy who did it first.
It literally is short term memory and stupidity. By which I mean white baby boomers - the people most likely to vote for trump - are collectively suffering from mental degradation. You know how some think Trump is probably suffering from the early stages of dementia? Just think about how many white people his age are suffering from the same shit.
it makes my fucking brain hurt that out of all things he's done, it's the shutdown that reminds people he's an abysmal president and even STILL there is more than a quarter blaming democrats
Well you can't build it without funding so no, you won't.
I don't think that's how race works, but okay.
I'd say Addison has done a remarkable job in fucking things up with trump, so Republicans are definitely complicit in all this.
I never said race had anything to do with mental degradation. I was simply pointing out that many of Trump's white baby boomer supporters are as unhealthy as he is, and unhealthy lifestyles absolutely contribute to dementia according to some studies.
Seriously, I live in Tennessee, one of the whitest and reddest states in the union. I work in a thrift store. The old white people who come into our store all the time are obese more often than not. And from just listening to brief conversations, they often sound like they're not entirely there anymore.
