WASHINGTON — The United States Senate overwhelmingly passed controversial legislation on Monday to curb boycotts against Israel, its first move since returning from a several-week government shutdown.
The Strengthening America’s Security in the Middle East Act, known as S.1, advanced in the upper chamber by a vote of 74-19.
The package included the Israel Anti-Boycott Act and the Combating BDS Act, bills that are both supported by most major Jewish organizations but vehemently opposed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and J Street on the grounds that it violates free speech.
McConnell felt this was so important he tried to put it to a vote several times while refusing to hold a vote on shutdown-ending bills during the shutdown.
When you look how eager and anxious the US federal government is to suck Israel's cock, it's a bit easier to understand how the anti-semitic/outright-nazi portions of the alt-right believe (((they))) are conspiring in the shadows. I'm not agreeing with the nazis but jesus fuck there's at least the slightest basis for their conspiracies compared to the typical "justifications" for hating muslims or blacks or whatever.
neocons are a scourge on the nation
cons in general, but especially neocons
This is an attack on the 1st amendment. Fuck off.
The worship of Israel by the US government is fucking gross. I get they are a key ally, but the fact you can't criticize them without facing consequences is fucking laughable, especially when they do plenty of shit that deserves criticizing.
Evangelicals believe supporting Israel will usher the Rapture. Can't beat that particular kind of crazy.
the ultimate irony is of course the grand conspiracy types tend to support the fanatical pro israel types while accusing the opposition which is not anti israel of being part of the grand conspiracy
There is no more basis for anti-Semitism than for any other kind of racism/xenophobia/discrimination, let's steer the fuck clear of suggesting anything like that
After looking at the bill itself, it's clearly meant to only apply to government contractors. For example, if you are Caterpillar and sell construction equipment to the us government, you must also be willing to sell to Israel if Israel wants your equipment. Private businesses and individuals that don't contract with the us government are free to boycott
That doesn't really make it better. It's still totally out of bounds. The US government is not the Israeli government. American companies should nt be forced to work with Israel if they want to work with the US government. That's fucking retarded.
H.R.1697
The bill prohibits any U.S. person engaged interstate or foreign commerce from supporting:
any request by a foreign country to impose any boycott against a country that is friendly to the United States and that is not itself the object of any form of boycott pursuant to United States law or regulation, or
any boycott fostered or imposed by any international governmental organization against Israel or any request by any international governmental organization to impose such a boycott.
wtf
The thing is that it's impossible for the government to enforce this unless the person is explicitly saying that they are following the boycott imposed by country/IGO X.You can even support BDS openly since that's not imposed by any country/IGO.
To be clear, all bigots deserve to be fired into the sun, I was in no way carving out any sort of exception for any of them.
