https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/27/ex-starbucks-ceo-howard-schultz-weighs-bid-for-us-presidency.html Former Starbucks Chairman and CEO Howard Schultz, who is launching a book tour this week, said he's "seriously thinking of running for president" as a centrist who is positioned outside the two-party system. With the field of contenders to challenge President Donald Trump growing daily, the 65-year-old coffee impresario who turned a local Seattle chain into a global coffee behemoth, is weighing the idea of an independent bid, he told CBS' "60 Minutes." Yet on the idea of free health care, he blasted Democrats for offering a "false" promise that was the equivalent of the border wall proffered by the president, calling it something "the country cannot afford." The former Starbucks chief's entrance into the race is likely to unsettle progressives, though, whom Schultz has criticized for having what he considers unrealistic goals. Schultz told CNBC last year that the "greatest threat domestically" was the national debt and said cutting entitlement spending was essential. Basically he's going to run if Democrats nominate a progressive to ensure either he or Trump wins to he doesn't have to pay more tax. He's actually more fiscally conservative than Trump and wants to cut Social Security.
So basically another one to add to the list.
if I had a nickel for every billionaire/millionaire asshole who thinks the best way to solve the national debt is to "cut entitlement spending", then I'd want to cut it too
The rich don't help themselves with the growing portrayal of them as corrupt and evil to the core.
Centrist. That's rich. Well, he's running as an independent, so he can be disregarded.
haha no fuck off. the last thing we need are more out of touch billionaires trying to ruin everything for us, one in the oval office was enough
Never have I seen a possible presidential campaign announcement get such an immediate negative reaction https://twitter.com/kylegriffin1/status/1090057028314243072
"How come we never had a libertarian as a president?" "Because libertarians don't believe in voting!" This guy won't get far.
It really pisses me off that so many of these people want to cut entitlement spending that we have all been involuntarily paying into for our entire working lives, with the understanding that that money would be ours come retirement time. (Silly) people talk about how taxation is theft, but cutting entitlements like medicare or social security is straight up theft. We paid into it, and now they want to take it away from us because they can't just learn to stop spending money when they run out.
how to help trump win reelection 101
Even ignoring everything else, running as a centrist in America's current political climate is basically admitting defeat before you've begun. Voters in 2020 are only going to accept radical left (by American standards) or radical right (by anybody's standards) candidates.
Splitting the Democratic vote 101
That's the idea. He doesn't like progressive economics and would rather have Trump in office then a fiscal progressive.
You're underestimating the danger here. He wants to run as Independent, not like Bernie running as a Democrat. If the Democratic party nominates someone like Bernie, centrist voters (especially older Democrats) may vote for Schultz.
This is actually a situation where "an independent vote is a wasted vote" common wisdom might benefit us.
Top Wall Street executives ... are getting panicked about the prospect of an ultraliberal Democratic nominee bent on raising taxes and slapping regulations on their firms. The result is a kind of nervous paralysis of executives pining for a centrist nominee like Michael Bloomberg while realizing such an outcome is unlikely from a party veering sharply to the left. Billionare Howard Schultz considering a 2020 run as a "centrist independent". Hmmm...
He doesnt want the white house. He wants to be a spoiler vote that steals enough dem voters to ensure a trump 2020. Thats the entire reason he isnt running under the dems or repubs, he knows full well he will be a spoiler vote and is banking on that ensuring a second trump term.
hey look another billionaire deriding universal healthcare that every other country has and raising taxes to pay for the deficit its like their solution to everything is tax cuts, stimulated growth and austerity, no thanks we tried that it didn't work.
So, we've reached the point where billionaires can basically just veto an election by intentionally running as a spoiler candidate.
Well, you don't need to wonder; the man more or less came out and said it. He's literally running for President to try and keep more of his money. https://www.thedailybeast.com/howard-schultz-blames-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-for-his-decision-to-run-as-independent
Independent voters don't mean they will vote for independent candidates.
I'm an Independent. You'll never get me to vote for Schultz. I vote based on who I think would do a better job as I look at how they handle themselves, what they consider the best route forward for America, and how much experience they have and who they surround themselves with as regards advisors. He has no plan for America. He has no great ideals. His great ideal is 'But I want to keep my money'. That's not Presidential. That's representing himself. He can do that by putting out ads if he likes - but he'll never secure my vote because I now know exactly what sort of President he'd be: a self-serving egoist/narcissist - and I'm not willing to trade one Trump for another.
His policies seem to mirror Republican platforms with cutting welfare programs, eliminating any chance of a high tax on the rich, and eliminating deficit spending. I don't understand how any of that would attract a Democratic voter to spoil?
And in this case, we don't want them voting for independents. Christ, this system is fucked. We have to game it way too much just to get a good candidate.
corporate dems and ancaps would willingly vote for those people.
I'd like to order one giant middle finger for this fucker, please.
yeah man America's real problem is just that it has too many entitlements, which it is well known for! right-wing American politicians complaining about entitlements is just the most pathetic thing ever
I always hated that they consider Social Security an "entitlement" like it's not something you've paid into for years. I'll bet he thinks insurance is an entitlement, too.
if even giving poor elderly people who probably have no chances at finding work anymore an income is just too much for them they're just a bunch of daft cunts tbh
Yet on the idea of free health care, he blasted Democrats for offering a "false" promise that was the equivalent of the border wall proffered by the president, calling it something "the country cannot afford." Is it a false promise in those nations where it already exists and works and is cheaper and people live longer? I'm sick of people literally denying reality when it comes to health care. Health care in the US is objectively done badly.
