https://thehill.com/homenews/house/427364-some-dems-float-idea-of-primary-challenge-for-ocasio-cortez Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has infuriated colleagues by aligning with a progressive outside group that’s threatening to primary entrenched Democrats. Now some of those lawmakers are turning the tables on her and are discussing recruiting a primary challenger to run against the social media sensation. At least one House Democrat has been privately urging members of the New York delegation to recruit a local politician from the Bronx or Queens to challenge Ocasio-Cortez. “What I have recommended to the New York delegation is that you find her a primary opponent and make her a one-term congressperson,” the Democratic lawmaker, who requested anonymity, told The Hill. “You’ve got numerous council people and state legislators who’ve been waiting 20 years for that seat. I’m sure they can find numerous people who want that seat in that district.” Hakeem Jeffries, the No. 4 House Democrat who some say could someday become Speaker, insisted none of his House colleagues have approached him to run a primary challenger against Ocasio-Cortez. In fact, the 48-year-old Jeffries said, delegation members this month lobbied Democratic leadership to grant Ocasio-Cortez’s request that she be appointed to the House Financial Services and the Oversight and Reform committees.
I love how much she's pissing people off but she's far too inexperienced with this kind of stuff. She needs waaaay more.
Because lord knows, childish infighting is EXACTLY what the democratic party needs right now!
This was my thought at the headline, until I actually read the article. They're trying to kick her out of Congress, by looking for challengers in her district to back instead of her, so that she won't get voted back into Congress.
Uhh? You need to be 35 years of age to the president? Shes 29
You’ve got numerous council people and state legislators who’ve been waiting 20 years for that seat. Your time is over, old man. The youth are pissed off with the same old song and dance and for good reason.
Not related to the 2020 presidential election, defeating her in the primary for New York's 14th congressional district that she represents now.
She's barely been a congresswoman for a month. Anybody seriously suggesting that she should run for president at this point is a straight up goober.
Please read the article text
Nothing wrong with competing against someone in a primary. That's the point of primaries.
Yeah, I'm completely okay with that. I'm hoping that she'll prove herself during her freshman term and be able to serve on a longer basis, but given that she's learning on the job, I don't think it's that outlandish to suggest that we give more qualified candidates a shot to make their case in 2020.
Try it. The people support her for a fucking reason. They're tired of neo-liberal policies giving corporate donors the handjobs and free passes that the rest of us never get.
I love Ocasio-Cortez's politics , but I think she's a little inexperienced (and under the legal age limit iirc) to be the actual president just yet. I don't mean to compare simple inexperience to Trump's sheer malicious ignorance, but look at the mess America is in right now because they don't have the right man for the job in the position. Don't get me wrong, I doubt Ocasio-Cortez even could be anywhere near as incompetent as Trump, but she wouldn't be as qualified as other potential presidential nominees right now, and that could still cause issues.
Guys come on the term "primarying" doesn't mean that
Nothing to do with the presidency. All 435 House seats are up for reelection in 2020 with primary party elections before. They want someone else to run against her in the primary for her district.
Yeah I read that about 12 seconds after posting (probably should have done it 12 seconds before lol) was going to just snop my post when I realised my mistake, my bad
The idea isn't competition, it's removing dissent within the Democratic party. The old Dems don't want to deal with anti-establishment policies, and her ideals are a threat to the old crowd that's been in office.
"Primarying against" would probably have been clearer
The more they do these stunts the more they energize the left. This establishment resistance is a good sign, it means progress is being made
I don't get how she isn't doing exactly the same thing by running in a primary for her policies. It seems like you just have an issue with their policies, as opposed to their participation in the proper democratic process. Primarying her out is how they should be trying to make policy changes. There is no issue.
She is supporting primaries against other Democrats so this is more tit for tat though it's a bit rich that they won't put their names on the record when Ocasio does all this out in the open.
The Republicans didn't announce they were running against Obama in 2012. They announced it on day fucking one of his presidency. Which is not far off from what the Democrats in this article are doing in regards to Cortez. They're not trying to primary her a few mere weeks into her tenure as a representative because they disapprove of her policies. Well, okay, they do - but more importantly, they're fucking terrified of her, just as much as the right wing was terrified of Obama. They know the days of the Democrats being a safe neo-liberal party are coming to a close, and they are going to fight to their last dying breath to keep themselves and their rich corporate donors safe.
Okay but you missed the point of that post which is that running in an election is not bad in any way. Yes they are. Oh, okay, so you just said something and completely contradicted it. Why did you keep that sentence in if you know it's not in any way true? Okay, and being terrified of someone doesn't mean they're actually correct. The thought of a Trump 2020 presidency should terrify you -- but that doesn't mean that Trump's doing something right.
I should have worded it better. They do indeed oppose her policies, but that's not why they're primaring her. Notice how Bernie Sanders has been able to get away with advocating for the same shit she advocates for for ages now? They didn't care until he ran for president, because they weren't concerned that he'd ever get what he wanted. They are terrified of Osario-Cortez, however, because they're worried she might spur actual change in congress by getting young people more invested in politics than ever before.
The issue isn't that they want competition in her area. The issue is why they want to compete against her. She's not even 6 months into her term, and old guard is already plotting to get her out of her seat. Not because they want to do so in the name of fair competition, but because they don't want to allow change in the old policy. This is precisely the source of fighting that the 2016 Democratic primary was centered on. The old Democrats who have been in office for years are fighting to keep control of the power that they still have. New waves of voters are not here for that kind of policy, and the Bernie/Cortez-style voters are on the uprising. The sole intention of this maneuver is to stop that anti-establishment movement before it can gain anymore traction. Now, you could say that this is all up to bias, and sure, it is. But the establishment democrats are on the downfall. People are tired of inaction that they bring, they want to up social policymaking, and they want to see changes that have been campaigned on in 2016. The people fighting against Cortez in the party are against that. Refusal to change is not exactly progressive. Ocasio-Cortez's proposed changes also serve to hurt them, which obviously, they don't want.
But you're literally just viewing a power struggle through the lens of "my side is in the right and needs to win". Why is it wrong for one form of Democrat to primary another, but not wrong for AOC herself to primary another? Both "sides" are vying to primary the others out and yet you only have an issue with one of them, but you're acting as if the very act of primarying someone is the problem. If your problem is someone's policies, talk about their policies. Don't decry the very act of running a campaign against someone else.
It's not wrong to primary her because you disagree with her. It's wrong to primary her because you want to keep unpopular policy in place through the power of the seniority that your dying breed of Democrat has. I've been pretty explicit in why and how this is bad, compared to just primarying out of competition. Dully, so because we have seen what underhanded tactics the Democrats are willing to pull to force their picks through (a la Clinton 2016). You are missing the point despite it being explained to you in two of my posts and 2 of @CyclonatorZ 's posts. Wishing to remain anonymous when attempting to prop up an insurgent primary in a member of your own party's territory should already red flag this as malicious intent.
Yet you don't criticize Clinton for running in the primary, you criticize her for distinct actions she took during her campaign. If it's unpopular then they shouldn't win the primary. I understand your point. I don't think you do. You're upset that these people are trying to primary out a candidate that you agree with politically. You believe that this constitutes an override of the will of the populous. But your issues are with the policies they want to push. That should be your criticism. Criticizing someone for running against someone else is anti-democratic. This applies across the board. If someone were to primary Bernie Sanders I wouldn't be upset with them. I don't think they'll win -- and I'd campaign, where applicable, for his victory -- but I don't believe that trying to be elected is itself the problem. If they can win a primary based on policies that AOC does not support, then doesn't that indicate that the people wanted them over AOC anyways?
if the 2020 election came down to an actual leftist vs. trump most of these scumbag democrats would vote for trump. they have their own interests in mind and nothing else.
yawn, she raised more money in her district than ever before and built a massive grassroots campaign, if her district didn't like her they wouldn't have voted for her.
