Always bugged me that rather than kill half the people you could just use the guauntlet to turn useless matter into useful matter, turn a star or two into nuclear fuel or something.
Thanos is crazy, and remember he was killing half of planets personally before he even got the gauntlet. You think when he gets the gauntlet he's gonna suddenly decide to change strategies rather than using it to continue doing what he already was?
He likely believes that he needs to teach the universe a lesson, because if he gave people more resources, they'd become even more wasteful and destructive. He's still in the wrong, but he's not nearly as crazy as some people claim he is. He's basically an uber-malthusian.

That's modern society; you can't have incredibly intricate and material dense products without it negatively impacting several already fragile ecosystems.
You know, it is possible to build a sustainable planet and lower the birth rate instead of murdering people.
I, too, would very much prefer a worldwide birth control movement as opposed to worldwide slaughter and mayhem
But how do we root out religious zealots that prevent contraceptives from being accessible in both the developed and developing worlds? Anyone know of some good charities that distribute the stuff to these places? And how would be normalize birth control in cultures that already find it taboo? It's a long process that, at this point, wouldn't help prevent calamity but rather help the world recover after calamity has begun, which could be said about anything that tries to repair the environment and stabilize human population and economies.
I'm just kinda fearful that the world is going to exceed the current expected 11 billion cap and by the end of next century we'll see 20 billion starving people on the verge of exterminating each other with nukes and bioweapons, fighting for a world that is continuing to become inhospitable to human life. If we can prevent that fate now, then we should probably start trying to do so.

Canonically, Thanos has a raging boner for Lady Death, and in the comics he's gone to the length of killing literally everything in the universe except for him and Old Thanos (because comics lol), only to have to fight himself to the death to get Lady Death's hand. That's why he has that shit-eating grin when that guy from Avengers tells him "To war with them is to court Death".
