Fucked with the title since it's really long.
ICE really needs to be dissolved.
We're supposed to believe "The law is the law" when we scoop up people that are living peacefully but undocumented in our country. Yes, lives and local communities are being ruined, but we're supposed to believe these people have brought the situation onto themselves and that they should have just done things the legal way.
Meanwhile ICE and CBP routinely violate the rights of US citizens, refugees, and undocumented people left and right with shit like this, racial profiling, detention conditions, etc. etc.
People calling for the dissolution of ICE might sound a little crazy at first, but what do you do with a governmental organization that systematically is overstepping their authority, violating the rights of citizens and non-citizens alike, and consistently shows contempt for the law? The system needs a serious overhaul. Full blown dissolution is probably a step too far, but clearly the status quo is unacceptable if the fixation on immigration is a "rule of law" thing and not just a ploy to tap into racial animosity.
Yep. I've got a friend who works on asylum claims and they've been doing this for the past six months at least. For those not going in to read the full article, this is why ICE is giving fake hearing dates:
One effect of this: The [hearing notices to appear, or NTAs,] could block an immigrant's eligibility for "cancellation of removal," a legal residency status granted to some undocumented immigrants after 10 uninterrupted years of living in the U.S. A NTA, even without a hearing date, would interrupt the 10-year "clock," said Jeremy McKinney, a Charlotte, North Carolina-based immigration attorney, in a telephone interview with CBS News.
A Supreme Court ruling last summer — Pereira v. Sessions — banned the practice [of listing "To Be Determined / TBD" as hearing dates on NTAs], requiring all appearance notices to use actual dates."
However, systems weren't in place for ICE to see the court's schedule, so ICE issued fake dates instead. Immigrants were instructed to appear on weekends, midnight, and dates that just didn't exist, like Sept. 31, multiple attorneys told CBS News.
I'm frankly astounded that a government institution would pull something like this. It's operating in blatant bad faith. An argument can be made for administrative incompetence, as with any large bureaucratic institution cases are bound to fall through the cracks, but this absolutely reeks of bad faith efforts. ICE is worming around a SCOTUS order and is misleading people, causing some to miss court dates.
To make it clear what's going on, cancellation of removal requires that a non-citizen live in the US as a permanent resident for 10 years uninterrupted. If they do, they are protected from being deported as long as they haven't committed certain crimes listed within statute. So ICE is sending out notices to interrupt that 10 year period, rendering immigrants who have lived here for 9 years and 350~ days as if they just settled yesterday, so they can more easily deport people.
And investigated. There are most likely people who belong in prison for gross neglect and abuse of public trust
I don't understand. We have a couple murders by illegals, so we need to build a wall and say NO MORE. It's time to STOP illegal immigration! Yet they also believe 38,000 deaths by guns every year is an acceptable price to pay for the 2nd amendment
I stopped trying to find logic in anything GOP. There isn't any
It all comes together when you realize they hate brown people.
