The Department of Homeland Security set up a fake university in Farmington Hills to target foreign students who wanted to stay in the U.S. without proper authorization, according to
federal indictments unsealed in Detroit on Wednesday.
Eight people were arrested and indicted in an immigration fraud case for conspiracy to commit visa fraud and harboring aliens for profit, said the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District
of Michigan Matthew Schneider. An indictment says the defendants helped at least 600 "foreign citizens to illegally remain, re-enter and work in the United States and actively
recruited them to enroll in a fraudulent school as part of a 'pay to stay' scheme."
This is not the first time that federal authorities have created a fake university to nab foreign students in the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security once created the University of
Northern New Jersey as part of a sting operation targeting students who enrolled in order to work and study in the U.S., according to a New York Times report in 2016.
Jesus what the fuck. The amount of ICE posting that has occurred over the last month of the ridiculous shit they are pulling. Shut this down already.
Wow. It's almost as scummy as their leader!

Seriously, fuck off. People trying to better their lives should be at the very bottom of ICE's priority list.

This is nothing new, it seems like it was an effective sting operation.

The indictments were filed Jan. 15 and unsealed Wednesday. They allege that from February 2017 through January 2019, the defendants "conspired with each other and others to fraudulently facilitate hundreds of foreign nationals in illegally remaining and working in the United States by actively recruiting them to enroll into a metro Detroit private university that, unbeknownst to the conspirators, was operated by HSI (Homeland Security Investigation) special agents as part of an undercover operation."
I know people want to hate on ICE but this is kinda their job....they went after people who were exploiting the system for financial gain. Foreign nationals were paying into this scheme without really knowing what they got into. Reading at the article, it seems like ICE busted the people who are responsible for this.
If you read the article though, they weren't arresting people seeking legitimate education and presence in the US.
The people they arrested were helping to enroll foreign students in what they knew was a fake college- one where the 'students' wouldn't be going to class or getting a degree, but on paper would be pursuing education and thus eligible to stay in the US. And they were doing this in exchange for payment. They knew it was a fake school and a form of fraud, they just didn't know it was being run by ICE.
The headline seems like bullshit; they were targeting people trying to fraudulently stay in the US, and Americans who were helping them do so for money. ICE has done a lot of unlawful, unjust stuff and I'm not defending them as an institution, but arresting people who are taking money from foreign students to get them enrolled in a fake university so they could claim to have a legitimate reason to stay in the US seems pretty reasonable to me.
I have been schooled & I unilaterally withdraw my statement!
