How about, fuck you?
It's there to show something is disliked.
Leung says. “If you’re going to give a downvote, maybe you have to click a checkbox as to why you don’t like this video. That could give the creator more information, and it would also give viewers pause instead of just doing it impulsively.
How adorable that they think this could actually work.
I'm all for it......... but you have to do the same thing if you like it. Just so we can get a new article titled "youtube wants 'like mobs' to stop fucking with content creators"
"Please explain why you did not like this video"
A single period is put in the box and submit is pressed.
How about putting effort into stopping mass flagging and copyright trolling instead?
There's something truly endearing (in an Orwellian nightmare kinda way) about a huge corporation being so naive.
Would be a nice feature if it was optional. Tho the comments serve a similar purpose
YouTube is just salty after Rewind
Youtube has been screwing channels out of subs and views for years, the site constantly gets changed in ways that sometimes kill entire genres of creator... Why would anybody do something just because youtube wants them to?
Isn't it possible to disable ratings for videos?
I don't know if they still do, but mobile games used to pull a similar thing where if you rated anything but the max it would redirect you to a questionnaire asking why, people obviously couldn't be bothered with so in the end very few actual low ratings went through.
They're so upset they forgot about what YT comments serve for.
Someone's still sore about YouTube Rewind, I see.
Can't do that. For the monolith that is YouTube, the people who spam copyright flags - the equally-monolithic media conglomerates - have ad money that YouTube wants and powerful legal teams that YouTube fears (or at least can actually put up a fight in court), so YouTube respects them. Whereas when we laypeople are even able to command YouTube's attention via actions like banding together for mass-dislikes, it's less "maybe we should respect our users" and more "how do we take away this voice from the cattle?"
Tons of creators are impacted by dumb changes, trending videos get out of hand, there's a cesspool of crappy child-target channels which may or may not be grooming platforms, animators are being fucked by an algorithm, criticism is continuously ignored, changes to the website are constantly made without insight given to the creators or users, a shitty completely disconnected official YouTube video turns out to be the most hated video on the platform.
YouTube: The dislike button is a problem.
You can make it private but it's still counting likes/dislikes afaik.

guess the comments are turned off permanently for them.
Might as well just hide the counter and remove the downvote functionality altogether, keeping the button itself only as a placebo, like they did with comment dislikes so no one's feelings get hurt
Wouldn't be surprised if they remove the dislike function in a future update.
I actually do agree on dealing with hate mobs with preconceived motives mass disliking content regardless of quality or topic just because tribalism, but it is an umbrella cultural issue and Youtube does have bigger priorities atm.
That requires actual effort.
Reason too short, please use 250 characters or more.

I hope this isn't corporatespeak which translates to "We're going to make thumbs down have no visible effect, just like what we did with comments.".
"HOW DARE YOU FUCKING PLEBIANS EXPRESS YOUR DISDAIN?!?!?!"
I think the point of the dislike button, in theory, is for users who would normally watch the video on their own to express their dislike of that particular video that was relevant to their interests. Then the uploader knows they are not pleasing their actual audience.
All too often, videos get "bombed" in this manner or with bad-faith reports just for saying something that a group of people doesn't like.
You guys are missing the point.
Likes and dislikes particularly help YT videos become more popular anyway lol
Then again this is a real problem that can be seen in other places like in Steam with reviews or in Twitter with the report abuse. I really doubt that a checkbox is going to solve it however.
Maybe some sort of delay to check if these votes are real or part of a mob like they did in the past? I doubt it will ever work since that implies they having to actually moderate the platform.
You are missing the point as well. Most people here are arguing that either:
a) YouTube should be focusing on other issues, such as their easily manipulated copyright system, the incorrect automatic flagging of videos, or how the almighty algorithm God hurts actual content creators in favor of content deprived daily videos.
b) The dislike button cannot be fixed.
I, for instance have a small channel of 500 subscribers. I don't upload regularly as I post things there I wanna show off. However there is one someone who is subbed to me for the sole purpose of disliking my videos.
YouTube can't do anything to prevent "dislike mobs" because any system they implement can simply be bypassed by anyone who is bored enough to dislike a video in the first place (after all, someone is subscribed to me for the sole purpose of disliking my shit). The dislike button is there for the same reason negative reviews exist on Steam, which is for people to voice their opinion. Whether that be for legitimate reasons or because the poster/developer did something the mass community doesn't like. Plus, if a channel doesn't like getting dislikes, they can disable it. If people don't get the gratification of seeing the number rise up, they most likely won't bother.
And like you mentioned, maybe YouTube should be focusing on making sure those "bad-faith reports" don't hurt the channel in any way instead.
There are larger problems, yes. I just don't think that we should be equivalating this issue with "youtube is only mad that people disliked Youtube Rewind".
I'm pretty sure everyone here meant that in a tongue and cheek manner, though I could be wrong.
Tongue and cheek? Such a dangerous weapon in any social setting with ratings.
Nevertheless, I really don't think the dislike button can be altered to deter "dislike mobs", but it might be possible to lessen the abuse's impact, or at least able to acknowledge the attack.
