Tens of thousands of Venezuelan protesters streamed on to the streets of the capital on Saturday for what they described as the final push to force Nicolás Maduro from power.
The feeling that the end was nigh for Maduro – who took power following Hugo Chávez’s 2013 death and has led his country into economic ruin and humanitarian crisis – was inescapable as huge columns of flag-waving demonstrators processed through Caracas and other major cities across Venezuela.
Large demonstrations were also reported in Barinas, capital of the state where Chávez was born and raised, and Maracaibo, the country’s No 2 city.

As Venezuela enters the third week of the latest and most serious bid to dislodge Maduro, there is a palpable elation among government opponents that Hugo Chávez’s widely loathed heir might finally be on his way out. Their optimism was fuelled yesterday by a video message from a serving general, Francisco Yanez of the air force’s high command, calling on the armed forces to rebel against Maduro and recognise his challenger, Juan Guaidó.
Maduro however has shown little sign of being prepared to stand down, and many observers are not expecting any imminent transition.
I'm very optimistic for Venezuelians, they've been shat on by Maduro for way too long - the guy is practically a dictator. I would be immensely relieved if he would be taken out of the office without resorting to a civil war of any kind - which honestly seems to be a likely outcome now. This is how dictatorships should fall.
Here's hoping the Maduro and all the Chavistas paramilitary leaders are hanged.
Their conduct against the Venezuelan people, who are simply asking for the basic necessities of life, should draw no quarter from those who capture them when this all ends.
really really love how theres 0 media coverage of the opposition rallies that are also taking place right now aside from 1 or 2 quotes from people attending them
Didn't Maduro make the National Assembly irrelevant by creating a constitutional convention assembly and instead of making a new constitution, just used that as a de facto National Assembly?
