The body recovered on Friday had a printed note tied around the neck which read: “I am Pirojpur Bhandaria’s (victim’s name) rapist Rakib. This is the punishment for rape. Rapists beware. Hercules,” Dhaka Tribune added.
This is the third such killing in the country, with two identical incidents reported in the past where alleged gangrape suspects were shot dead and left with a note tied to their necks.
Vigilantes are what happens when your system doesn't work
Normally I'm vehemently against vigilantism, but considering how much of a shithole India is in general and in regards to rape in particular, I've got no problems with this guy.
If this is one of those "they absolutely did it but the system is broke" type deals, then awesome. If this is one of those "they're suspected but there's no real proof other then hearsay" type deals, then fucking scary.
Unfortunately we typically let the courts decide if "they absolutely did it", and without a day in court it doesn't seem just to simply kill people based on accusations.
Geographically they are close, but Bangladesh is not part of India.
If you think the state convicting and executing innocent people who fall through the cracks is bad, imagine the false positive rate of random murderers killing people who have been accused of crimes.
Easy there. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe in by-the-books justice and innocent until proven guilty and all that. When I say "absolutely did it", I mean "there is 100% undeniable proof", which sometimes even then isn't enough to get a proper conviction, especially in a country like India where the justice system can be less than ideal.
I'm saying if these guys absolutely 100% confirmed did the deed, then I don't really care that they got done-in by some dude playing Frank Castle. If there is even a sliver of a doubt, however, this immediately turns into "lunatic kills innocent men because someone said they maybe might have done something wrong perhaps". The article is really scarce on details so there's no telling what this Hercules guy knows or what his stake in the situation is. We don't even know how much evidence they have against the accused; this could literally be as vague as "they more or less match the physical description of the assailants" or as open-and-shut as "their DNA was found at the scene and on the victim, eye-witnesses named them, their alibis don't match up, and we have photographic evidence".
It's the difference between "a civilian killed an armed gunman who tried to shoot up a school" and "a civilian killed his neighbor because said neighbor owned an AR-15". If they actually did it, then I'm not exactly shedding any tears over dead rapists. If they didn't, then this is a really fucked-up, troubling story for a good number of reasons.
What's wrong with you guys? This article uses words like 'accused' and 'suspect' liberally. He could very well be murdering innocent people.
Regardless of what this guy is doing, India needs to fix its fucking law system. It makes ours look peaceful and utopia-like in contrast. It's an embarrassment for a country which boasts one of the biggest populations in the world.
Everybody cheer for Hercules!

I was thinking more like this:

I was debating on making a Mr. Satan reference but his first name is "Hercule" and not like the vigilante guy's name.
Vigilantism is acceptable when the justice system isn't doing its job.
Not so much acceptable as a necessary evil.
So it's okay to potentially kill more innocent people because the justice system doesn't work?
Here's Hercule's theme song, sang in Indian.

I don't think anyone in this thread is trying to argue that Vigilantism is a good thing, just that because of how fucked up the justice systems are in Bangladesh and India that it's an acceptable thing in the circumstances that it's absolutely certain that someone did it.
And it probably is certain they did it because women don't report or talk about rape in southern asia for fear of reprisal, so unless they absolutely did it, I highly doubt people would be lying about it.
