makes a lot of sense for cross-platform games. not a bad move by a long shot
This seems like the biggest reason for them to do this. Xbox Live was already implemented into Minecraft on Switch as a way to connect to others for crossplay, so it's no surprise that Microsoft would not only want to give devs the chance to implement an easy crossplay solution using an account already tied to a platform, but make Xbox Live accounts the account for crossplay. Currently for crossplay devs have to add their own ID system to track everyone between systems so this would make it way easier.
imagine a timeline where consoles are getting unified account systems while PC platforms are getting segmented
I got Minecraft for the Switch shortly after they announced cross platform support, and I was prompted to sign in to my Xbox Live account that I hadn't used in like 5 years. It was a bizarre experience.
I love that we live in an age where were have a Nintendo-Ubisoft power couple and now a Nintendo-Microsoft one.
This is one of the weirdest headlines i've ever read.
Which gives Microsoft a single point of contact to mine information and in desperation, force paid services.
