STAR did this and yes, he got hate, but it wasn't that long lasting and everyone just forgot about it months later.
This dude faked his death. Valve even added a stat with his name to one of the items as some kind of mourning of his death and I guess to underline his legacy. But now, that is meaningless. He lied and tricked tf2 coders into believing he is dead.
And no amount of apology videos will matter. Ironically, he comitted a suicide in the tf2 community. Many people are turning on him now.

I've always felt that you're allowed to joke about anything, so long as you're targeting the right people. You can actually joke about rape without sounding like a totally tasteless asshole if you're making fun of the rapist (see it's always Sunny, the implication). You can joke about a terminal illness, like making fun of shitty actions by drug companies leading to deaths because fuck those guys. There's constant jokes about children dying in lmao pics, but they're making fun of anti vaccinators, who are the ones responsible for those deaths. Making fun of the people mourning a death by causing them to mourn a death is not cool at all.
I am glad that I am not up to date on TF2 personalities tbh
