RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Another top Virginia Democrat has admitted to wearing blackface decades ago. Attorney General Mark Herring issued a statement Wednesday saying he wore
brown makeup and a wig in 1980 to look like a black rapper during a party as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia.
The revelation further roils the top levels of Virginia government. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax are already facing controversies, and Herring would be next in
line to be governor after those two men.
Many including Herring have urged Northam to resign after the discovery of a photo of someone in blackface on his 1984 medical school yearbook page. Fairfax, next in line to be
governor, has been accused of sexual misconduct, which he denies.
A Republican will be governor if they all resign.
This is a coup.
Wowie, what a joyful coincidence that all 3 Democrats that stand in the way of a Republican governer all got these unfortunate articles published about them this week. What great fortune!
This is the next step beyond voter suppression, the step after this is shooting the opposition.
Who could have foreseen people exploiting outrage culture as a political tool.
Politics are fucking dead once deepfakes are more polished.
interesting it all comes right after this
Ex-Fla. Secretary of State Apologizes for "Blackface" Photos
seriously, this is a hitjob and the people who jumped on this instantly have made this worse.
the DoD is working on/funding tech to detect deepfakes, it'll most definitely be an arms race b/t deepfakes and anti-deepfakes but at least we're working on tools to combat it
Herring put out this statement intentionally because of the Northam controversy. He was probably worried that a picture would leak soon so he wanted to be ahead of the curve.

EVERY ELECTED OFFICIAL IN VIRGINIA: Uh oh!"[/quote]
We should all start wearing blackface in solidarity with these Virginia democrats. Fellas who’s with me?
Is "oops, this Democratic official wore blackface in college" gonna be 2019's "oops, this outspoken male feminist turned out to be an abusive, predatory sex-pest"?
I don't think he should resign. Unlike Northam and his bizarre attempts to "prove" he's not racist by moonwalking (???) Herring isn't making excuses. He's admitting he did a dumb thing in college and is asking forgiveness.
I'm not sure what exactly "outrage culture" is or how long it's been around but conservative activists have been doing this shit since the 90's. The benefit of opposing the party that platforms equality is that it makes attacks against individuals who have done racial transgressions in the past easier and more effective. It's like how you can criticize conservatives for hypocrisy when they want to increase the deficit, the only difference is Republicans don't have standards for their representatives while Democrats do.
I think it's also worth remembering that this whole thing kicked off because the governor of Virginia made abortion more easily accessible.
I've got a simple suggestion:
Don't resign. Even if he did it.
Particularly now that the allegations on Fairfax now look really fucking bad
Not exactly. A delegate presented a bill which would do so in subcommittee, and it was killed. Her testimony that the bill would allowed 3rd term abortions was widely publicized by right wing groups, and Ralph Northam commented on the bill on a radio show supporting it.
Woops, got it mixed up with New York, my bad.
This has been a thing since forever
Articles to slam a political opponent by trudging up dirt is as democratic as you can get
'Muck Rakers' were exactly for this purpose back at the turn of the century.
