Glukhovsky, who also worked as a narrative designer on the upcoming title, opens by saying that the Metro games are all “thanks to the support, help, and heroic efforts from the part of [developer] 4A.” He goes on to say that “I’m very sorry about those of you who wanted and expected the game to release on Steam, and were misled by the move by the publishers.” He does, however, say that he trusts Deep Silver’s decision to move the game’s initial release to the Epic Games store
true betrayal was making the game exclusive a month away from launch and still releasing news updates on the steam store after it was pulled.
No sorry fuck you.
Well metro author, we the fans feel kind of betrayed...
What kind of silly logic is that.
To a degree I can feel for the author and in parts the devs being forced by shit publisher decisions.
On the other hand this switch to Epic Store was the real betrayal, considering how close it was to release and how they do some weird split now.
Epic Store doesnt have regional price, sure i will betray them
No, I will buy your game in 2020 or if you release it on multiple platforms right now.
Thanks for playing.
But it was the publisher's choice, not the developer's.
So? Only way to punish this kind of behaviour is to not buy it, sucks for 4A but that's the way it is.
He obvious wasn't really involved with the decision and it's unfortunately that the developers will be affected through no direct fault of their own, but I don't see why consumers should just excuse or accept it, there's a very good reason people aren't happy. Basically saying "Please don't hold us accountable for choices we made that will negatively impact you" is an absurd stance to take with this.
There's nothing to betray, fans are regular consumers and need to be making educated decisions. It's a game series, not a pledge of loyalty, if you fuck something up and people don't want your product as a result, it's as much of a betrayal as going vegan is betraying meat. This wordplay he's doing is a disgusting attempt to appeal to fans and try to convince them they have some duty to buy the game. At the end of the day some people might be fine with the switch and still support them, everyone has their own priorities, but by no means does anyone have a duty to buy a game if the company behind it has made decisions they disagree with. I recognize this isn't a statement from the game company, but my point still stands, blind brand loyalty is dumb.
ON the one hand: Yeah, it sucks for the developer and author to have to take the hit on this because of shitty publisher practice. On the other hand: I'm not going to reward the publisher for pulling anticompetitive bullshit like this. Unfortunately the developer will have to suffer the consequences of the publisher's actions. I might buy it in 2020 when it comes out on Steam.
That's not the stance he's taking - it's really more "please don't hold us accountable for choices someone else made that we have no control over."
They chose to operate under this publisher.
Their publisher's decisions are their own responsibility now.
If the game had only been on the Epic store from the start, I probably would've just used it and moved on. Trying to exploit my honest love for the series and prior goodwill toward the devs - just assuming I'll tolerate being jerked around because I'm obviously just that hooked - to make some extra last minute profit on an exclusivity deal while continuing to advertise the game on Steam - and then trying to guilt trip me over it - is a fast way to make sure I'll never buy another one of your games.
They aren't going to get my money. This isn't a protest, this is lost business.
I see it as a forced backhand call for publishers to take notice that pulling shit like this shouldn't fly, despite publishers keeping on falling down the stairs.
I don't get why people are so upset with the dev's. The people behind them who fund this studio's development made the decision, and they can't rightly refuse.
There is no way to seperate financially. I can't support the devs and buy the game, and the publisher not get their cut. Either the devs become a causlilty of me not buying, or the publishers get excused by proxy when I purchase, it's a binary option. What else am I to other then sending checks to the devs themselves with the memo "keep up the good work."
I guess I just mean posts like the first post seemed a little too overboard
Of course don't buy it, but there is room to not be an ass too.
I feel sorry for the devs and the author who are clearly passionate about the IP and care about the fans but are forced to put up with their publishers greedy bullshit, which they're gonna suffer for.
As much as I deeply love the Metro series, I don't want to be seeing my purchase of this game as an A-OK sign to developers and publishers that this kind of exclusivity is is acceptable. I'm going to have to pass on this one.
I feel so bad not supporting the metro series (seriously I do) but I can't support the principles behind this exclusivity deal. If epic wants people to buy games from their store they're gonna have to discount them or something. Give the consumers the incentive to go to epic's store, and not through a choke-hold.
Personally, I couldn't care less what platform I have buy it on, it's even 10 dollars cheaper on the epic store which I why i decided to grab it there and not on steam while I still had chance. What I do care about is Deep Silver/Koch marketing the game for well over a year on Steam, just to pull that bullshit and continue to publicly market the game on steam while it's not buyable there. I understand that people who preordered the game have access to it, and updates, on steam. But they should not be publicly marketing the game on steam until next year.
Wish I could buy a copy where profits go 100% to the devs and not some greedy publisher.
I hope in the future we can get to a point where reliance on publishers are no longer needed
I really dont want this game to fail, it could spell the end of the series since its already sorta small compared to other shooters.
Complain to Epic/Deep Silver, not the fucking fans.
I do feel really bad for 4A games, they're not the ones that betrayed us, the publisher did. The publisher betrayed us and betrayed 4A.
They didn't really have a choice unless they all wanted to leave their job.
THQ sold the ip to Koch when they went bankrupt. I dont think devs would have had much of a say in that afaik. Doubt they would wanna take the risk of leaving and finding another job.
I'm starting to read between the lines here. These devs can't just go out and say "yeah that was a shit move our publisher did and this fucks our fans over big time for legitimate reasons" because that's bad PR and basically insubordination which risks their job. So, they word it in a way where the conclusion supports the actions of the publisher with certain sentences approved by PR but they otherwise convey what they're feeling.
It always fucking blows when the devs and writers get the punch to the face due to their publishers insane delusions and awful planning.
