A Virginia Military Institute yearbook overseen by future state Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment in 1968 features a host of racist photos and slurs, including blackface.
The revelation about one of Virginia's most powerful Republicans comes as the state’s Democratic governor and attorney general are facing calls to resign over their own admissions
they wore blackface as young men.
Norment, R-James City County, was managing editor of The Bomb publication that year. He went to VMI after graduating from James Blair High School in Williamsburg and has been
a state senator since 1992.
On one page of the yearbook, a student poses in blackface, surrounded by others in costumes at a party. Another page features a photo of two men in blackface holding a football.
The N-word is used at least once. A student listed as being from Bangkok, Thailand, is referred to as a “Chink” and “Jap.” A blurb under one man’s picture says: "He was known as the '
Barracks Jew’ having his fingers in the finances of the entire Corps."
Now Republicans are getting in on the action
You know how if everyone's super nobody is?
Does the same thing apply to racism?
no
And this guy called for Northam to resign over the blackface
This is literally what racists say to justify their racism. They will even try to hold the high ground by claiming "everyone's racist, I'm just more honest about it."
If you're from Virginia and over 40 years old, go back and check your yearbook. There's a good chance you were wearing blackface in it.
I'm pretty sure Virginia just sucked back then.
I'm pretty sure Virginia just sucks.
I'm p sure most of the US sucked in terms of racism back then lol
I'm pretty sure this smear campaign is getting ridiculous
Its weird how we refused to acknowledge individuals as racist but rather only see history photos of inanimate objects such as segregated water fountains.
As for its relevancy today, I don't see the issue as long as you disavow your past actions and don't continue to be a racist.
this really is the fault of the guys who jumped on this and demanded his immediate resignation. Everybody in virginia probably has a racist yearbook
No, really it's the fault of Republicans who were so offended that Democrats could have a problem with Kavanaugh that they decided the opposition to him has legitimized nearly-unlimited digging up of old historical blemishes against anyone they don't like, which right now is any Democrat politician in states they don't already control and feel that they should.
McConnell promised that Democrats had prompted a race to the bottom and here we are on the ground floor.
If the governor should resign over his racist yearbook photos, then so should every single republican politician in Virginia who also has racist yearbook photos. Which I'm pretty sure would mean almost all of them considering they don't give a shit about minorities in the slightest.
there are a lot of voices on the left saying things like
"It was really a minimization of both people of color, and a minimization of a horrific history I knew well even then."
and acting like these guys have had a long political career of racism and demeaning minorities.
The NAACP and similar groups on the left are stoking the fire by not giving him any other option but to resign
This is the problem: I'm alright with calls for Northam to resign, except that people with similar scandals on the other side won't. So we're in a situation where Republicans can prey on the fact that the Dems have some dignity left.
"I'm an equal opportunity offender" for instance
It's also weird how we refuse to really acknowledge that some people were child molestors just because they were famous. We excuse some, don't excuse others. Elvis Presley had Priscilla Presley move in to his house when she was 14 and he became her legal guardian, fucked her til she was 16 and then married her. Charlie Chaplin impregnated a 15 year old. Woody Allen adopted a 7 year old girl when he was married to Mia Farrow, then when she was around 13-15, he started fucking her and eventually married her after Farrow discovered nude photographs of Soon-Yi in 1992. Where do we draw the line?
Jesus, what? I'd never heard that about Presley and Chaplin.
This has been the GOP strategy for a while now. Have you forgotten what happened to Al Franken? People of both parties called for his inevitable resignation. Since he was a Democrat, he has ever bipartisan condemnation. Steve King made extremely racist comments, and got bipartisan condemnation, however Republicans weren't calling for his resignation, thanks to the magic (R).
One side has standards whereas the others doesn't, which gives them an advantage.
It's a pretty awful situation to be in, having to strike a balance between being a party with some actual fucking morals and contesting a party that doesn't have such scruples. It's like the whole "paradox of tolerance" when it comes to Nazis. "Wow, I thought you were the party of tolerance " says the person who would expel or exterminate millions if given power. The really disgusting thing is how often it works.
This is why I keep saying constantly that the so-called horseshoe paradox is bullshit and if it comes to that, these people need to be nipped in the bud before we get another iteration of nazism v2 going, or the handmaid's tale becoming a fucking reality. Why we have such people in a supposedly modern and enlightened society trying to drive us back 200 years I dont know, which is exactly why we don't need them around, by any means necessary if it comes to that.
And don't forget Michael Jackson!
