https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/techwatch/corinne-weaver/2019/02/07/chinese-censorship-company-invests-millions-reddit Reddit, the internet forum for communities, posts, and news, is currently fundraising to keep itself afloat, with a $300 million goal. Half of that goal has already been met, thanks to a massive investment of $150 million from Chinese censorship company Tencent. The company is in charge of blocking, blacklisting and preventing internet access to certain groups, sites, and information in China. Ironically, Tencent is responsible for the banning of Reddit in China. Tencent is now “literally reinventing censorship in China,” according to Gizmodo. The company works closely with the Chinese government to ensure that the standards for censorship are met. Tencent also produced a mass messaging app called WeChat, which is monitored and censored by the Chinese government. WeChat has been the basis for many arrests of Chinese citizens because of the statements made on the platform. The Citizen Lab reported that Tencent has discovered ways to censor images within messages, so that if someone shares a meme with information that is forbidden to share in China, the algorithm will automatically change the luminosity, lightness, and shade in order to gray out the text. Reddit has been getting bombed with a lot of shock images lately about the brutalities in China. Upon some further research I came across this. Its pretty frightening and there are a lot of NSFW posts on reddit building up. some NSFW (Blood/Bruising/Beatings) Look at what Chinese militants did to protesting Buddhists. We will not be censored. Capital punishment in China... gunshot to the head. We will not be censored. (No gore but disturbing none the less) Tianamen Square (2013). Incredibly Graphic Footage of the Massacre [1:18:40]
Impressive. Concerning, but impressive
So they found a way to remove all those "stolen from reddit" watermarks? Talk about giving 9gag a field day.
they are slowly... gaining control.....
https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/aok1zf/lets_also_remind_the_fact_that_the_chinese/ Just another headline that just seems insane to even think about
I can't say this enough but stay the fuck away from us China.
As if Reddit needed any help with censorship.
That explains all the anti-China shit on Reddit today. I'm cool with a good China-bash any time because the Chinese government is always being fucking awful.
I checked Reddit today for the first time since moving to Japan and thought I was getting a load of anti-China shit as promoted posts lol
Alright, I'm just gonna say it now: China is trying to gain control over the entire world and the West is just letting them do it like the absolute fools they are. Tencent already invested in Epic, Discord, Activision/Blizzard, Ubisoft, Riot Games, Square Enix, Supercell (Clash of Clans), Grinding Gear Games (Path of Exile) and Bluehole (PUBG) among others. Players that refuse to be bought up (e.g. Valve) are actively being forced out of the market, see the Epic store debacle. And EA isn't doing that well either, last time I checked. And that's just the gaming industry! At first everything may seem just fine and dandy. China will help these companies flourish and bring games to the Chinese market, or help them out of financial trouble, such as with Reddit. But one day their influence will grow to a point where every target Tencent has invested will be forced to buckle to their demands. The trap will spring in all companies at once -- bow to the will of China or be left dead in the dust. And with the death of forums, with the primary channels of communication being Reddit and Discord, China will control the global discourse. From there on it will only be a matter of time until they overtake Western governments. They have already started in New Zealand, Australia and large portions of the African continent after all...
The persistent corruption and incompetence entangling the US may lead to its decline, and with that, a power vacuum that China will overtake. The US if not the world in the coming decades maybe dealing with competent authoritarian governments taking over.
Stolen from the reddit page. In case people haven't seen the Chinese massacre and understand the disgusting actions they did and censored. NSFL https://www.aboluowang.com/2008/0529/89034.html
That "Bolognese". Holy shit wtf China.
China's getting too fucking ambitious and I don't like it. I don't want my future kids to grow up believing whatever propaganda bullshit they're wanting to cram into their throats, it'll cloud their judgement and critical thinking - something we all desperately need in this growing civilisation. I hope that despite this in the future we'll wise up enough to notice this and take action and deny their government of involving themselves like this in our affairs.
""China""" doesn't deserve to exist and it was one of the times where the good guys lost. Taiwan is and always has been the real China. god I hate them so fucking much can't xi and everyone else who supports that fuck just drop dead already
Valve isn't participating in it because they're a private company and always have been. You can bet your ass that if they were publicly traded, they'd let Tencent invest in them. China is one of their biggest audiences now, after all. Also if they were publicly traded, we'd probably actually see more games from them due to pressure from investors to actually make games. We also wouldn't have seen things like Steam Machines or SteamOS, which could be good or bad depending on your perspective. As for Tencent allowing for China to "take over the world", I mean China already sort of has considering pretty much everything we have in the world is made in China. I feel like trying to control communications though is going to be a pipe dream, because that shit is going to be easily noticed by the other governments around the world. It's why the US is refusing to allow the use of Huawei's networking equipment due to potential espionage, and why there's a potential ban on devices made by both Huawei and ZTE that may come to pass.
Remember that it was the UN that shafted Taiwan in favour of China for cheap goods and trade deals.
I remember people telling me I was nuts on FP a couple years ago because I warned them that China was going to be a dangerous censorship and info control power-player. I really wish I was nuts, because this shit scares me to the fucking core.
The first picture posted in /r/pics conveniently got "removed" by a mod. And the many more that followed with 100k+ upvotes just so coincidentally don't show on popular or front page. :thonk:
Shocking, not.
"Only chinese-friendly user get to date people." "We see that you've been talking bad about china recently, so your dating score was lowered and now you will only get ugly match"
not insane at all just nobody gives a damn for some reason China is controlling everything bit by bit, be it through purchasing anything it can, or with force.
Because people are either complacent or they feel powerless. There nothing much civilians can do other than not purchasing anything China touches, but we all know that's next to impossible.
China now effectively owns atleast 5% of the world's most popular discussion/image sharing board and has direct influence over moderators and user's posts. If this isn't a direct attack on our free world then I don't know what is
There are still a few up on r/popular. I just reloaded the page to check and there was one video up with the sorting set to "hot". It definitely does seem like a lot were removed from r/popular, though. I scrolled back down to the stuff I saw on it last night and most of the ones I saw aren't showing up anymore.
Correction, there is one 50k Tianamen Square massacre post about on r/popular. However, I checked pages 2-5 and they contaion no fuck-china posts. My prediction is that the one that is left will be removed in an hour or so, or it will be left there so that Reddit mods can say "what are you talking bout , we're not removing anything! See there is 1 post right there on the frontpage! :^)"
There probably ought to be some kind of "Fuck China" pressure group.
reminder that taiwan was one of the founding members of the UN and a member of the security council just to be illegally ousted by China. FWIW, the US opposed this but most countries favored it.
Meanwhile: I warned people not even a month ago that China would definitely use its influence to make culture like its own. I still entirely believe that the current anti-porn shit that's happening everywhere involving videogames is due to China.
I don't think they are complacent. You have the option of not using X thing done by someone you hate, and you can leave it without a problem, you do it. Problem is, China is everywhere. If people have the option, I'm pretty sure they're gonna go for it, but as you said, its impossible at this point.
