Suprised how some people's reaction to this game went from "EA killed titanfall 3 for a battle royale" to "hey this game looks decent"
I mean, I don't doubt it's good, it's Respawn working on it after all with apparently absolute freedom but...
still not what I hoped for
I feel like the only reason that EA still gets away with stuff is that people have attention spans of goldfish or just flat out don't care.
Or they just like the game. Wow what a crazy concept.
The game is a good game.
Doesn't stop the fact that the people who run EA only care about getting all of the money, and have been treating companies like trash for more than 15 years now.
Sorry but unless this game has Titans in it, I couldn't give less of a fuck
So basically we've entered a logical paradox in which we should support companies because they're good and shouldn't be killed by EA because their games are underperforming, but we also shouldn't buy their games because they're owned by EA which causes EA to kill them faster.
It's quite the depressing situation, isn't it.
Its actually super fun and well made. I was all ready to hate it, and I was totally wrong.
Something that I find quite nice and clever about AL's design is the mountainous environment they went with, by breaking the map up into areas with specific corridors in and out, and reducing the amount of windows on buildings, they were able to achieve a much larger map than Valve could in CSGO battle royale, while simultaneously making sniper weapons less overpowered than they are in other battle royale games. It's a clever workaround of engine limitations that ultimately benefits the game as a whole. I still would have preferred they kept in some of the mobility gameplay from Titanfall though, because combat encounters definitely feel better when played mobile rather than static, but even a weaker version of the regular Titanfall combat is still better than most in this genre. I wouldn't really say it's a particularly great game because it removes so much of Titanfall, and battle royale as a concept is a serious limiting factor, but judging it just within the arena of battle royale games and modes, it's one of the better ones.
The game has a mixture of good optimization and netcode, good map design and good gun and inventory design. I had zero hopes for it when I heard of it coming out under EA but since it's free I started it and I was pleasantly surprised. Also the ping system is absolutely incredible.
Seems like Respawn Entertainment defies EA's bullshit time and time again.
Both Titanfall 2 and this got little to no marketing, and both are really good.
Titanfall 2 got no marketing because EA are a bunch of shits. But Apex apparently had zero marketing because Respawn knew the backlash from even announcing the game would send their fanbase into hysterics (and they were right based on the reaction to leaks). As they put it, they wanted the game to speak for itself.
This is assuming that they weren't lying about having almost complete creative control over the game. I don't think EA holding a gun to their head would work out based on how Vince has acted in interviews with EA PR reps sat beside him;
At this point, Devin Bennett, a publicist for EA, interjects, “What we’ve said is we’re committed to the franchise.”
“So, whatever the f*** that means,” retorts the Respawn CEO.

The guns in this game don't feel quite right, there's something off about them and I can't quite place what it is, but it's ever present.
I thought the same when I've first played the game but you'll get a feel for them after a while.
What I kinda hate right now is the view bobbing and that your crosshair constantly moves when you're reloading. I hope they let us turn off those things in the future.
Played about 40 hours now and I have to say that it's easily one of the best Battle Royales I've ever played.
Can't wait what they're doing with it in the future.
while there's no doubt that this game affected TF3's development, I doubt this game outright 'killed' TF3 though. It is possible that they're using this game to fund TF3's development and the lack of advanced movement can be seen as a way to adapt the game into BR format. They can always patch new characters with those movements later on with how the game is setup though.
No Titans are pretty disappointing though, but the game itself aren't focused on Titans apart from being in the same universe and I can see them being a bitch to balance.
Yeah I feel that temporary TF2-level of movement could easily be an ability. Maybe a character with a busted pilot jump pack, which can only be activated for a period of time (but while active, grants the usual wallrunning and double jump shenanigans).
I wanted to hate the game, but it's actually enjoyable and well made for a F2P game.
