It's really a beautiful sentiment. With the advent of the internet I've made friends for life in people that I never would have known existed otherwise. Every year in January I travel to America to meet my friends at MAGFest. It sucks not to see them for the other 360 days of the year but those 5 are an absolute blast.
This article really hit home for me. World of Warcraft RP is a huge part of my life and has been for almost 10 years now, and this article really put a spotlight on it and what it does for people. It 100% got me through some tough times, especially during school. The escapism it can provide is immense. On the server I play there was actually a huge festival celebrating an in-game event called the Lunar Festival last night, and I met several new people there and so did the friends I RP with. Place was packed.
A lot of people aren't ever going to understand why I enjoy WoW RP as much as I do, find it sad even, but this guy's parents finding out about what their son did and why it meant so much to them is a really nice note.
I got so many internet pals I meet up with at MAGFest. What a magical place.
Damn onions
This reminds me of when I was younger, how I had no friends in real life and no social life.
All I had was my friends online, and the communities I were a part of.
Everyone I met were my friends, no matter how far away they were, it was really a magical thing.
A lot of parents don't understand this, I know my Mum didn't "How can they be your friend if you never met them?", it didn't matter if I ever met them.
I am really glad for the sort time this guy was alive for, that he met people, made friends, got to experience as close to a normal life as he could.
Looks like it's beginning to rain tho..
Since we're on the subject of World of Warcraft RP...

fucking classic
I don't know what the Horde's equivalent is to Goldshire but it's got its reputation for a reason.
Apparently Silvermoon city. Some others say Razor Hill, but apparently the Horde prefers blood and carnage over lewd roleplay.
Definitely Silvermoon. The amount of elf ERP I seen there was frightening. That being said there was still some normal roleplay going on, so alliance have it worse.
Oh my god I almost fucking cried when I got to the bit with the drawing, you could see the pure emotion of this entire situation just in that alone
God what an article. I wish I heard about all of this sooner, this was extremely touching.
Whilst its obviously different to the WoW scene this article has been amazing, my parents read it before i did and they said it helped them to understand what on earth i'd been talking about when i'd mentioned the people i'd met online and what on earth we were up to.
Turns out they've now shared it with a load of their friends with kids who spend a lot of time on the internet.
In my opinion whilst many of our parents and their generation don't know nothing about videogames or internet communities in general and at worst they see it all as hostile time wasting leading to pedophilia or web-crime, I think the real issue is ignorance. When you find a way to show them the best of your communities, they can open up to it and get genuinly interested. Not as in they want to join in (thank god) but they're far more open to the idea of internet communities as a whole.
Its all about what you show them really.
What a touching tale. I'm glad he had such good friends.
