Bipartisan talks aimed at resolving the border wall dispute and averting a government shutdown Friday have broken down and are at an impasse, lawmakers and others familiar with
the situation said Sunday.
Lawmakers had been trading offers, trying to finalize how much money could go to barriers along the border as President Trump demands money for his wall. Trump has called for
$5.7 billion, but lawmakers were trying to find a number between $1.3 billion and $2 billion that would be acceptable to both sides.
At the same time, Democrats were trying to limit the number of detention beds that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency would have access to. Democrats want to
cap detention beds as a way to limit aggressive detention activities by ICE. People familiar with the talks said that the question of ICE beds led to the impasse, as Democrats try to cap
the number, while Republicans seek a way to exclude violent criminals from the cap.
Lawmakers and Trump face a Feb. 15 deadline to pass new legislation to keep the government open. If they don’t, large portions of the government will begin to shut down.
Oh yeh, forgot the shutdown was only stopped for 3 weeks. RIP federal workers again.
destroying the country to own the libs
I really hope the STOP THE STUPIDITY Act passes
we have the longest shutdowns, we're going to have even longer shutdowns, hold the country ransom to own the libs, maga
the democrat proposal sounds doa, 2 billion for a reduction in ICE beds is pretty pointless. Either get the wall and swallow some reforms to ICE or shut the government down till you're being impeached over incompetence
I can imagine ICE just putting more people in a cell with not enough beds for everyone. What a joke.
ya I'm not liking what I hear, the democrats are more concerned about preventing a shutdown than getting any real concessions.
last i heard unions for federal workers have been discussing what to do when another shutdown happens and hopefully it'll result in mass strike action
Better do your tax returns and grab some emergency supplies. This shit is getting ugly.
gotta make sure the shutdown doesn't interrupt the superbowl or else people might really get mad
#greatest country in the world
Here's the faint glimmer of light from our country that you can appreciate:
A lot of us hate this assholes guts.
replace superbowl with gladiator games and it sounds straight out of ancient Rome
Who'd be his closest Roman counterpart? If such a thing even exists?
Obviously Caligula
He has to appoint a horse as his VP choice in 2020 first.
Even better is this year's tax returns are so fucked that most people who made the same amount or more are owing taxes rather than getting money. Overally tax returns are down around 10%, so people are getting livid over the new tax breaks.
B-b-b-b-b-but the Republicans promised the tax cut would benefit the middle class! It can't have been a permanent tax giveaway to the swamp creatures while the tax cuts to the middle class expire, meaning taxes will go up even higher for Trump voters (and everyone else).
And just like that the last remaining lie of the great Republican corporate tax cut falls away: That voters would see their tax returns increase because Republicans had worked so hard to give them a tax cut and it so totally wasn't a corporate/upper-class gift.
unless the locations are restricted to 1600 Pennsylvania avenue then the democrats caved as the WH will just happily waive their limits under the fencing act anyways.
Republicans aren't "just" going to override his veto.

Major Democrat victory since they were willing to give 5.7 billion for border security during the shutdown
The last time they had the opportunity to do so, with literally a 100-0 vote, they immediately shutdown the government and went 'nothing we can do, folks'.
*Mitch Mcconnell isn't going to "just" override his veto. Thanks to the rediculous rules of the senate, any senator can bring a bill to the floor, regardless of the scheduling from the senate majority leader, but anyone (including the senate majority leader) can object. Why you would write a self defeating rule like that, who knows, but regardless, mitch mcconnell absolutely controls what gets put up to a vote, and he will not have a veto override of his sitting president.
I almost wish that were true, just so someone could point fingers at Trump in a really dire way even him would look at it twice, but this also means a good bit of destruction...
Like, imagine fucking up your country so BAD over something nobody but you and a handful of idiots want
well fuck, just as I finally got my W2 forms to file taxes this fucking bullshit just has to happen again.
And don't think that the Republicans are 'held hostage' by McConnell either. If they didn't want him obstructing, they could remove him from his majority leader podium as retribution for making them look bad.
