Sony’s gaming business has a new leader stepping in to take the top job. Jim Ryan will take over as SIE president and CEO beginning April 1. He is swapping places with current president and CEO John Kodera, who will take over Ryan’s role as SIE deputy president.
Sony is noting that Kodera will continue his work toward building up the company’s gaming and content services. Ryan, meanwhile, will begin overseeing the entirety of the PlayStation business.
Ryan built a reputation after leading the the PlayStation brand to dominance in Europe. He oversaw Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for years. He continued as president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe before getting a promotion in 2018 to deputy president.
But PlayStation fans may know him for occasionally sticking his foot in his mouth. Like when he spoke about backward compatibility.
“I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 games,” Ryan explained to Time Magazine in June 2017. “And the PS1 and PS2 games, they looked ancient. Like, why would anybody play this?”
You can purchase a PlayStation Classic with 20 PlayStation 1 games at a retailer near you right now for $100.

Yeah fuck this dude, I liked backwards compatibility for ease of access vs spending over a hundred on something else.
Xbox wins the next console gen already, wow.
Sony’s too dumb to follow them on the backwards compatibility, which is a major point for MS.

fuck, and I JUST found a great deal on a still sealed limited edition ps4 pro
Didn't Sony just patent a system designed to work with all eras of PlayStation's catalog?
patent =/= any plans (or even ability to) create thing
They've almost always followed through with their patents, from the Eyetoy and Move Controllers to even the little shite Playstation mini.
They didn't follow through with their "MCDONALD'S!" patent.
They've almost always
"Jim Ryan will take over as SIE president and CEO beginning April 1."
What if it all turns out to be a apirl fools joke?

Because they're good games? Why is it that graphics advancement turned so many people into spoiled butts that turn their noses up at "ancient" graphics?
Because they sold the entire PS3 generation on it and tried to use "graaafix" to run the Wii into the ground. We know how well that worked out for them.
Well it's not just Sony, though their PS4 arrogance has gotten way out of hand. There's loads of people that are snobs about old games and ancient graphics. My brother's batshit insane ex-girlfriend refused to touch Final Fantasy VII because of the lego people. And getting someone that can't even understand the appeal and quality of older games that created the very legacy you sit upon as a CEO doesn't bide good news for the company to me personally.
it's not a prank
it's just a joke from day one
To be fair Sony has been going down since they gained dominance. They got arrogant after the PS2 and got their shit kicked in for the PS3. Then Microsoft got arrogant and got it's shit kicked in for the Xbone while Sony played humble. Now Sony is being arrogant again while Microsoft is playing humble.
This is all just a cycle, if Microsoft wins this generation they will get arrogant and lose the next. Then Sony will get arrogant and win the one after that. They will never learn. The only way to win the console market game is not to play.
How many millions will this guy get for just taking the job? God, I hate executives.
iirc a lot of people ask for backward comp but it's disproportionately underused by consumers.
It's not actually that massive a selling point for the mass market, because the mass market moves on fast and will rarely linger on old games when it's so easy to acquire new titles for relatively cheap.
