Hey guys, I'm trying to get someone into watching more black and white films and it started to occur to me that I haven't seen as many as I'd like either.
We've gone through a few of them already, here's a few just to rule a few out
-Persona
-Night of the Living Dead
-Ace in the Hole
-Carnival of Souls
-The Apartment
-Harakiri
-The Seventh Seal
-Night of the Hunter
-Rebel Without A Cause
-Bicycle Thieves
Any suggestions are appreciated. Just trying to broaden our horizons.
The Third Man
Metropolis
Rashomon
Yojimbo
citizen kane should be the obvious answer
bela tarr's films are great too but not so accessible
Seven Samurai
Gojira
Through a Glass Darkly
The Seventh Seal
Scenes of a Marriage
Fanny and Alexander
Raging Bull
Schindler's List
Citizen Kane
On the Waterfront
Dr. Strangelove
Metropolis
The Treasure of Sierra Madre
Grapes of Wrath
Rashomon
Paths of Glory
The Hustler
City Lights
Casablanca
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Nosferatu
The best years of our lives.
The train.
The great dictator.
The Maltese Falcon.
Casa Blanca.
Young Frankenstein
King Kong.
The good earth. Can't forget that one.
12 Angry Men my guys
Metropolis
Godzilla?
This. It really aged well and it keeps you interested right from the start. Considering the minimalist approach, it blows my mind how entertaining it still is.
The Killing
The Killers
Asphalt Jungle
Out of the Past
Really, look out for classic noir films from the 40s and 50s and you’ll find some great black and white cinematography.
Just watched Throne of Blood today, that one's awesome too.
You'll open yourself up to a lot of stuff if you just watch anything that's rated very highly and aren't too picky. If you go down the top movies on IMDB you'll hit a lot of stuff in this thread.
A bunch of Kurosawa's movies were mentioned here and I need to throw in another recommendation for him. If you like his movies, there's a LOT of good ones.
Personal favorites:
Yojimbo (Clint Eastwood's character in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly appears in three movies. The first one, Fistful of Dollars was heavily based on Yojimbo)
Ran
Kagemusha
Red Beard
Can't believe Psycho hasn't been mentioned yet.
Its pretty good, although almost everybody knows the plot twist
All About Eve
A Streetcar Named Desire
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Day the Earth Stood Still
And I'd highly recommend watching Raiders of the Lost Ark in black and white at least once.
Andrei Rublev is one of the best films ever imo

And despite being probably the most disgusting, incomprehensible film I've ever seen, Hard to be a God is also one I'd recommend

Superman and the Molemen.
Johnny Got His Gun
Not totally black and white but there are maybe 3 total scenes in color.
Sin City counts, right?

Make sure to enable closed captions.
Just watched Ingmar Bergman's "Winter Light" and tbh I could recommend that to pretty much any film enthusiast.
M (1931)

If you're looking for black and white, I'd watch Seven Samurai.
Anything from Akira Kurosawa, really.

I highly recommend Some Like It Hot and An Inspector Calls.
Any of Alfred Hitchcock's work, really. Dr Strangelove, hell, watch the original Twilight Zone series.
Ed Wood
Just caught this the other day.
Probably my favorite Burton film. So, so, so underrated.
