I clicked on this excitedly thinking there was a new wild west game. I am disappoint
Very fitting they announce this on valentines day.
What kind of game is Catherine? It's not exactly a dating sim in the traditional sense. The descriptions I've read almost make it seem like some sort of niche psychological thriller.
Vincent wakes up in bed with a woman he doesn't remember sleeping with named Catherine. He is currently engaged to a woman named Katherine. He has to decide whether he wants to stay with Katherine or leave her for Catherine. He's also plagued by nightmares where he has to climb giant staircases made of pushable blocks and if he isn't fast enough he'll die.
It's a puzzle game where you're asked questions about relationships and life. It's fucking weird.
That's... Intriguing, actually.
It's a game based around infidelity but not in the traditional sense or anime sense. It's something more about the character themselves and how it drives forward the plot. It's actually nice as there's not really all that much focus on the sexual side of infidelity but rather why it happens to this character.
It's part love triangle tale (Love Square/Block with Full Body I believe), part bar-hanging, part nightmare block puzzle game that all weaves together. It's one stylishly whacky yet charming game whose production later informed Persona 5. I watched a Story Playthrough quite a few years back, and it's genuinely interesting stuff I want to make time to play for myself (Especially since Catherine Classic's on Steam, with Dual-Audio too) and the English localisation was noteably impressive.
If you need recommendations, I believe SuperButterBuns did some yelling about it, and HyperBitHero did a detailed Your Next Favourite for the game a couple of years back (The latter may have minor visual spoilers, but both largely leave the narrative to one side)
I'm not huge on puzzle games but the original was really good and it's one of the very few games that has story/writing good enough to make me want to keep playing just for it. Really makes you question things about loyalty to your partner and if said loyalty/marriage is sorta signing your life and freedom away, among other things through most if not all the game. Not to neglect the gameplay since it was really fun as well.
fuck stages 6 and 7 though
