But that is the situation being reported by teachers in communities across the UK – children arriving at school so hungry that they are filling their pockets with food, or even scouring bins for scraps. Siobhan Collingwood, a headteacher at a primary school in Morecambe in Lancashire, told the BBC that she has seen pupils arriving with nothing in their lunchboxes, and parents bursting into tears because they have no means of feeding their children. Unfortunately, her story is not unique. Other teachers have reported children who are thin, with “grey skin, poor teeth, poor hair”, tired by 9.30am because they haven’t eaten. The UK is the world’s fifth-biggest economy, with a GDP per capita four times the global average. Yet, UNICEF figures show 19% of children under 15 in the UK live with adults who struggle to buy food – among the worst rates in Europe, but on par with the United States. The charity Child Poverty Action Group claims that 30% of children in the UK live in poverty – that’s 4.1 million children. Particularly surprising is their finding that 67% of children in poverty live in a household where someone works. That is evidence of a growing trend: people who have jobs, but who still struggle to afford the basics. Somewhere something went very very wrong. Of course something went fucking wrong, simple human greed from the side of those who don't want to see others having a comfortable standard of living, simple human sloth among those who can change something because "nothing will change no matter what i do anyway" and "why do we need to change the status quo? it might upset some important people", and as a result of these, simple human envy and wrath boiling over from the dispossessed and the angry which will eventually burst its boundaries and reap a reckoning for all the suffering people have had to endure. We are living in an age of such plenty where the total agricultural production relevant to global needs is more than enough to supply all individuals' needs. Yet, there are crops being plowed under, fruit left to rot on trees, and people forbidden from making use of either because again, of greed. Companies wouldn't give away anything that doesn't directly benefit them because they fear for lost sales. Governments won't buy crops at a rate fit for farmers and won't teach them how to farm effectively. Recently in india farmers dumped, in protest, tons of crops on one of the national highways, because the government refused to buy them at anything near their actual price. That's fucking bullshit. Unfortunately, it'll be years before we see any real change to politics in this country. My stepfather heard on the radio yesterday that 120,000 deaths had been linked to austerity, and he muttered "Snowflake Society". As long as people like that are still voting, then that number will continue to rise.
