"The information we collect may include personal information such as your first and/or last name, e-mail address, phone number, photo, mailing address, geolocation, or payment information," reads the new EULA for Civilization VI. "In addition, we may collect your age, gender, date of birth, zip code, hardware configuration, console ID, software products played, survey data, purchases, IP address and the systems you have played on. We may combine the information with your personal information and across other computers or devices that you may use."
didn't it already do this prior to this though just without eula saying anything about it
I a lot of games probably do this without you knowing.
The types of information collected in connection with the activities listed above will vary depending on the activity. The information we collect may include personal information such as your first and/or last name, e-mail address, phone number, photo, mailing address, geolocation, or payment information. In addition, we may collect your age, gender, date of birth, zip code, hardware configuration, console ID, software products played, survey data, purchases, IP address and the systems you have played on. We may combine the information with your personal information and across other computers or devices that you may use. Prize winners may be required to provide additional information for prize fulfillment.
Most people saw this and uninstalled but after reading the context I found that they have two categories for data: Personal information and Gaming Information.
The Information that people keep mentioning ( The text in bold) will only be collected when doing things like applying for a job or winning a contest. And will not be shared unless required by law, most information they do share is only Gaming information like Your username :
When you use products or services on internet-capable hardware, the Company may receive information regarding your gameplay without any additional notice to you or actions taken by you. The Company will not receive personal information such as your name and address, but may receive other information such as a console ID, gaming service ID, game achievements, game scores and performance, IP address, MAC address, or other device ID, other console/device use information, or other information and statistics regarding your usage of the games
From Reddit.
This kind of stuff is always overblown.
Come on can we have one thing, just one, that isn't constantly spying on us? Why are they so interested in info about us anyway? I don't just mean these guys I mean in general.
Yeah read this post.
Transparency is not an unreasonable thing to ask for when the modern digital company is sustained by predatory data-mining practices.
They are being transparent.
at least they're being honest about it :v
still... nope, nope nope nope, not going near this game
does this go away if I build the Great Firewall?
As transparent as you can be when embedding things into a massive EULA, but yeah they are and it doesn't seem that bad. Companies have done and are doing worse, including many websites.
My question is, why do companies even need this information? If you don't know your target demographic, you aren't paying attention, any data collecting is just a lazy and impersonal way to cheat that information. What's next, they gonna data collect your amazon purchase history to find out what their fans like to buy too?
personal info makes targeted advertising cheaper and eventually free
