WASHINGTON — The chairman of the House oversight committee says ethics officials believe President Donald Trump’s lawyers provided false information about buying the silence of
porn actress Stormy Daniels.

Rep. Elijah Cummings says in a letter Friday that the false information was provided to the Office of Government Ethics by Trump’s personal attorney Sheri Dillon and former White
House lawyer Stefan Passantino. Cummings says one of the ethics officials described “evolving stories” provided by Trump’s legal team about the $130,000 payment to Daniels after
she alleged an affair with Trump.

Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, has pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations connected to the payments. He said Trump personally directed him to make them.
Cummings’ committee is investigating the payment. Congress is seeking documents from the White House and Trump Organization.
