Chicago (CNN) Two law enforcement sources with knowledge of the investigation told CNN that Chicago Police believe Jussie Smollett paid two men to orchestrate the assault.
The brothers, who were arrested Wednesday, were released without charges Friday after Chicago police cited the discovery of "new evidence." The sources told CNN that the two men
are now cooperating fully with law enforcement.
Smollett told authorities he was attacked early January 29 by two men who were "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs." He said one attacker put a rope around his neck and poured
an unknown chemical substance on him. The sources told CNN that there are records that show the two brothers purchased the rope found around Smollett's neck at an Ace Hardware
store in Chicago.
Smollett gave his first detailed account of what he says was a hate crime against him, and the aftermath, in an interview with "Good Morning America" that aired Thursday. During the
interview he expressed frustration at not being believed.

I mean I've seen so many bullshit stories on facebook about someone that works in a service sector field and they'll get a receipt that says "WE DON'T TIP NIGGERS!!!!! MAGA!!!" and it's revealed within like two days that they're full of shit.

Its sadly a not so uncommon thing to do by certain groups.
The goal is basically to try and get attention to the actual issue but since those things often get figured out it really just backfires if somebody of that group fakes it.
Similar things have also happened with hate speech graffiti, fake attacks, in all kind of minorities.
And as people have already said, its really bad since it gives power to the people who deny the legitimate issues, just because some idiot thought its a good way to get attention to it by faking stuff.

The police arrested two people, interviewed them, let them go, and now really want to talk to him. I don't know man.
Some people are saying that this is a fake hate crime. I dont think so, I think its a real hate crime against but against white people.

Yeah, I have a hard time believing the police in this case considering that the Chicago police ran literal black sites where they would torture confessions out of people.
This is what happens when you start with a conclusion and work backwards to disregard evidence that doesn't confirm it.
This isn't a disregard for the evidence, this is being skeptical of the group claiming the evidence due to their history of corruption, racism and violence.
This evidence in particular is also circumspect since reports are claiming that the suspects were initially uncooperative but when the cops threatened to charge them with hate crimes, they suddenly claimed they were paid to do it.
So it turns out Chicago isn't maga country after all?
I dont see the point in faking this type of shit yet every so often you'll see a story pop up where someone claimed something and then it turns out it was faked.

Chicago police said last month they were investigating an alleged assault against Smollett, who is black and openly gay, as a possible hate crime. Smollett told police he was attacked about 2 a.m. on Jan. 29 by two people who yelled racial and homophobic slurs, tied a rope around his neck, and poured a chemical substance, which he said he believes was bleach, on him. According to Smollett, at least one assailant told him “this is MAGA country” during the alleged attack.
On Friday, Chicago police said they had arrested two potential suspects on “probable cause that they may have been involved in an alleged crime.” Guglielmi told The Washington Post that at least one of the two men, who were later released without being charged, has worked on the Fox drama. Guglielmi did not confirm whether the men — who are of Nigerian descent and believed to be the “persons of interest” seen in surveillance images released by police last month — knew Smollett.
“Due to new evidence as a result of today’s interrogations, the individuals questioned by police in the Empire case have now been released without charging and detectives have additional investigative work to complete,” Guglielmi said in a tweet Friday night.
The latest police statement comes amid increasing news reports, which cite unnamed police sources, that Smollett may have staged an attack in the city last month.

Nothing is conclusive yet. The police have been wrong in the past and they can be wrong again.

The tweet goes on to say this is a Class 4 felony and detectives are currently presenting evidence before a Cook County grand jury.

How serious are false police report charges? Does it get effected by motivation? What about conspiracy charges?
