It's not a bad idea feeding larvae with organic waste. There's a lot of people using black soldier fly larvae in composting. They eat the foul smelling stuff, also eat eggs of other disease spreading flies , and you can feed them to your chicks when they're big and fat. Or eat them yourself.

They've also taken off quite a lot in the agricultural industry as a way of reducing waste, there is specialist centres which will buy in organic waste from farmers, feed it to the larvae then sell the resulting fertalizer they produce and the larvae themselves for the purposes listed above, plus they have a peanut like taste if you ever try one.
