https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/18/us/edray-goins-black-mathematicians.html Thought this was an interesting article, especially for a forum that can be very divisive on things like affirmative action.
“A couple of them were at a board writing something,” he recalled. “I went over and asked, ‘What are you guys working on?’” “We’re too far in to catch you up,” he said he was told. jesus christ, what pieces of shit
fucked up
we live in a society
And somewhere in America, Redskins still exist, and probably still holding grudge on the rest of the world for giving them "Screw you, Elves!" attitude.
wat
I would've just scratched over the blackboard just to be as petty, Jesus Christ. Fuck those guys.
We shouldn't be looking and judging by skin color but as human beings, it's just a healthier habit to ditch this whole race thing.
You realize shadowrun is a game, right
I was talking about Americans before America was founded. Yes, those guys, that had red skin and were Indians.
fyi "Redskin" is like calling a black guy a nigger
Really? Heck if I knew...
Forgive me for asking, but i'm not understanding why this is inherently racist. I could easily imagine that comment being a "we're working hard on something / on a roll and can't really be interrupted". sure, it's not nice, but i'm not really getting the connection that it's to do with his race
If you treat it as an isolated incident sure but if it keeps happening you start wondering what's up.
This is just objectively false. The vast majority of Native Americans don't find it offensive. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/new-poll-finds-9-in-10-native-americans-arent-offended-by-redskins-name/2016/05/18/3ea11cfa-161a-11e6-924d-838753295f9a_story.html?utm_term=.892c3d996f6b)
of course this is a hill you want to die on lol https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/redskins/native-american-activists-continue-their-fight-against-redskins-team-name/2018/09/17/4438443c-ba86-11e8-bdc0-90f81cc58c5d_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.1c58d2f91d11
Are you implying that us committing genocide is okay? Almost all of them still live in total poverty if they're on reserves.
next time you're driving through a reservation and stop for gas or something you should definitely ask a native person if they're a redskin real brain genius you are
I did not imply that. Sure, what the settlers of New World did is a great atrocity(especially those ever-plaguetastic Spanish rats!), but that happened nearly 400 years ago and a grudge for it is pretty much deserves to be let go of.
So a So a small number of activists now represent an entire race who don't agree with them... Ok. If that's not racist, I don't know what is. These activists being the same color as other people doesn't make them representatives.
You're not even remotely willing to consider that the statistic you quoted has perhaps changed or shifted? Okay, not surprising. So, are you saying that just because these activists are native american, and offended, that doens't give them a right to do anything? The fuck kind of logic is that?
The whole point of the article I cited is that those stats haven't changed, even with all the activists and media attention. Hell, even 85 % of Native Americans who identified as progressive didn't find it offensive. I'm saying these activists can be offended all they want, but they are only speaking for themselves as individuals. They are not representatives of Native Americans as a group. Saying that a word that only 1 in 10 find offensive is the same as the word "nigger" is asinine.
“I am an African-American male,” Dr. Goins wrote in a blog published by the American Mathematical Society. “I have been the only one in most of the universities I’ve been to — the only student or faculty in the mathematics department.” “To say that I feel isolated,” he continued, “is an understatement.” Experiences similar to Dr. Goins’s are reflected in recent studies by academic institutions on attrition among underrepresented minorities and women across many disciplines. Interviews with departing faculty of color indicated that “improving the climate” would be key to retaining them, according to a 2016 University of Michigan report.Officials at Columbia, which has spent over $85 million since 2005 to increase faculty diversity, with disappointing results, suggested last fall that progress would hinge partly on majority-group faculty members adjusting their personal behavior. In Bold: I want to believe that this is a mischaracterized quote that has been taken out of context for the sake of shortening the article. Then i cross checked this article while also checking his twitter to try and give this man the benefit of the doubt and... I respect this man for what he represents, what he's done and how far he's come along and such but it grinds my axe when someone with a phd in mathematics is playing identity politics. I get that some people have egos but when your at the height of academia they're not being condescending to you because of your race, they're being condescending to you because they're jerk offs. As for the non bold quote yeah. What did you expect? You can't fix cultural problems in democracies republics by just throwing money at it. Look at manufacturing or oil, they're both heavily subsidized industries and pay really well for relatively simple work (albeit sometimes dangerous) for most of its workers and yet most women don't want to work there despite countless efforts to get them to do so.
the poll indicates that the majority of surveyed native americans dont give a shit about the debate roiling around a national football team that they don't give a fuck about. it's a poll about "redskin" in a specific context, with an answer that points to a specific use. as usual, you're so mired in the literalism and granularity of a specific atomic fact of a larger discourse that you have to drag another thread into the dirt while missing the larger point. that point was simply this: some dude used the blanket euphemism "redskins" to refer to all native american people and he was corrected. there's literally nothing untoward about that. also, you're wrong as fuck about the poll you keep quoting
you sure seem to know a lot about this man's life and experiences, as well as apparently all of the nuances and complexities of racism and academia, for someone who's read one online article on the topic, and apparently much more than the person who actually lived through it first hand
is bringing up race in any context ever immediately playing identity politics now?
You all should read about John Urschel sometime. He's another black mathematician who used to play in the NFL.
To be fair, that's only to be expected when you're a practitioner of the Forbidden Mathematics.
No. I don't know, your right. I have not experienced what this man has and perhaps i'm a bit naive about academia. I'm fairly certain though that academia isn't intentionally racist. I've tried finding examples of intentional academic racism from 2000-2019 but other than this of which case ehh fair but the racism she faced wasn't intentional and the article is to small to paint the whole story, there's also something called the old wolf revisited that's paywalled otherwise i can't seem to find anything that isn't some craptastic blog or sensationalist drivel.
Yo just a side-note. If any of you are actually interested in learning about black history and racism against blacks both in the past and today I'd really recommend checking out What's Ray Saying. Really good, informative, and entertaining podcast on the subject. That's all, continue your discussion.
